>China is to ban all TV content that features Korean stars including dramas, movies, entertainment programs and advertisements

China is to ban all TV content that features Korean stars including dramas, movies, entertainment programs and advertisements according to Chinese media outlets on Sunday.

The ban is viewed as retaliation against Korea's decision to deploy the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system.

"We are to ban all Korean entertainment programs under the new guideline that came down from the government," said an ENT Group official, a Chinese Media & Entertainment company.

"However, programs that have been approved by reviews and meet the official guidelines of entertainment programs have been excluded."

Although no official document has been notarized by the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television, which handles all TV programs in China, broadcast executives are seeking to deal with the ban.

With tension between Korea and China over THAAD continuing to grow, Gen. Vincent K. Brooks, the United States Forces Korea Commander, said the ground-to-air weapon system would be deployed in the next eight to 10 months.

S. Korean shares end lower on institutional selling
http://english.yonhapnews.co.kr/news/2016/11/21/0200000000AEN20161121007151320.html

SEOUL, Nov. 21 (Yonhap) -- South Korean shares closed lower Monday as institutions and retail investors sought to reduce risky shares ahead of what local analysts called an imminent U.S. rate hike. The local currency further lost ground against the U.S. greenback.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) lost 8.53 points, or 0.43 percent, to 1,966.05. Trading volume was slim at 213.7 million shares, worth 3.2 trillion won (US$2.7 billion) with losers outnumbering gainers 645 to 168.

The index pared earlier gains as institutions and individual investors turned to massive selling while foreigners remained net buyers.

Institutions offloaded a net 48.63 billion won, while retail investors dumped a net 39.5 billion won. Foreign investors scooped up a net 66.84 billion won, extending their buying streak to a third consecutive session.

"Concerns over a possible U.S. rate hike in December have been around for months. And the U.S. dollar has further strengthened since Donald Trump was elected the next U.S. president, affecting stock markets in most emerging countries," Mirae Asset Daewoo analyst Ko Seung-hee said.

Chinese Government Looking to Ban South Korean Entertainment Content
http://www.businesskorea.co.kr/english/news/industry/16545-prohibition-order-chinese-government-looking-ban-south-korean-entertainment

On November 21, the three largest entertainment companies in South Korea hit a 52-week low without exception on the KOSDAQ stock exchange.

Specifically, SM, YG Entertainment and JYP Entertainment lost 8.16%, 6.9% and 2.79%, respectively. Cosmetics manufacturers remained bearish as well. For instance, Amore Pacific lost 3.76% and the rate of decline was 3.1% for LG Household & Health Care, 5.73% for Cosmax, 5.48% for Tony Moly and 3.48% for It’s Skin.

This is because of the news that the Chinese government would ban South Korean entertainment content. According to Chinese news agencies, the Chinese government told local broadcasting stations not to air South Korean TV dramas, TV shows, movies and the like although the government has denied the instruction. Earlier, the China National Tourism Administration imposed regulations on travel to South Korea, mentioning that the regulations were against low-cost travel.

No South Korean TV drama has been permitted to be broadcast in China since September last year. “It seems that rumors are turning into reality with regard to the Chinese government’s restrictions on Hallyu content,” said an industry insider, adding, “The restrictions are predicted to include not only TV broadcasting but also broadcasting via Internet platforms.”

>Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the People's Republic of China

Q: It is said that China is tightening up its restriction on the ROK by requiring Chinese TV stations not to air advertisements casting pop stars from the ROK. Can you confirm that? What is your comment on that? Does China take the move because of THAAD?

A: First and foremost, I have never heard about any restriction on the ROK. Second, the Chinese side is always positive to people-to-people and cultural exchanges with the ROK. However, I believe you can all understand that such kind of exchanges should be based on public support. Third, the Chinese side's steadfast opposition to the deployment of THAAD by the US in the ROK is well known to all. The Chinese public has voiced their dissatisfaction as well. Relevant parties must have taken note of that.

The Bank of Korea buys 1.5 trillion won in bonds to stabilize market

With the financial market jittery since U.S. Federal Reserve Chairwoman Janet Yellen’s hinted at raising U.S. interest rates, Korea’s central bank announced it intends to intervene in the local market with the hopes of stabilizing it for the first time in eight years.

The Korean central bank said it will buy six government bonds worth 1.5 trillion won ($1.27 billion) at 2 p.m. today ranging from those with maturities of three years to those that mature in 20 years.

This is not the first time that the Bank of Korea has purchased Korean bonds; it purchased them three times last year alone. The last time was in October 2015, when the BOK bought 700 billion won in bonds. However, this is the first time since the 2008 global crisis that the Korean central bank is purchasing such a massive amount of government bonds. That year, the bank bought 1 trillion in treasuries on Nov. 19.

Market instabilities have risen since Donald J. Trump’s upset victory in the U.S. presidential election on Nov. 8. After the real estate mogul won the election, Korean bond interest has been rising rapidly, breaking this year’s all-time high.

Bond yields expected to rise on inflation concerns
https://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/biz/2016/11/123_218640.html

Bond yields are expected to rise further on the forecast of higher and faster inflation on the back of President-elect Donald Trump's pledge for fiscal stimulus, tax cuts and tightened immigration laws, analysts say.

Yields on government and corporate bonds have been rising toward record highs as global investors have been pulling their money out of their fixed-income portfolios on concerns that Trump's fiscal policy would not only increase U.S. debt but also bring forth a contractionary monetary policy to tame the expected inflation.

"The local yields on bonds are expected to continuously rise (due to the forecast of higher inflation), despite the central bank's commitment to market stabilization," said Peter Park, analyst at NH Investment & Securities.

>Chinese expert: THAAD in Korea will be first target in case of China-U.S. conflict

SEOUL, Nov. 22 (Yonhap) -- A former Chinese diplomat warned that the U.S. anti-missile system to be deployed in South Korea could be the first target for a Chinese attack if conflict breaks out between the two superpowers.

Yang Xiyu, a senior research fellow at the China Institute of International Studies, also said the installment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system will bring a significant change to China's relations with South Korea, prompting Beijing to "re-think" the burgeoning bilateral partnership.

"The warm degree of China and South Korea may change. For example, last year, the degree was pretty high. We had a very good relationship. But if the THAAD deployment will be brought about, the degree will change," Yang Xiyu told Yonhap News Agency on the sidelines of a seminar held in Korea late last week.

He served as head of the Chinese foreign ministry's office dealing with Korean Peninsula issues in the mid-2000s and was involved in the now-suspended six-party denuclearization talks.

In July, South Korea and the U.S. announced a plan to place the missile shield by end-2017 to beef up defense against the growing threat from North Korea.

The decision drew strong opposition from China. Beijing immediately protested that THAAD, which is equipped with the powerful X-band radar, could hurt its strategic security interests.

During the seminar Yang said that Beijing is preparing all necessary measures including diplomatic and military ones with regard to the THAAD deployment on the peninsula.

"I am not meaning broken (relations). Good friends, normal friends and just colleagues are quite different because of strategic considerations," he said to Yonhap News. "We need to re-think the China-South Korea partnership."

>South Korea's opposition parties move toward President Park impeachment

South Korea's opposition People's Party will start collecting signatures for an impeachment motion against President Park Geun-hye, while the main opposition Democratic Party will review the conditions for impeachment, party spokesmen said on Monday.

South Korean prosecutors said on Sunday they believe Park was an accomplice in an influence-peddling scandal that has rocked her administration.
