Would I be better off with a resume that shows a short employment

Would I be better off with a resume that shows a short employment gap or a resume with a job that is clearly a drop off in my experience?

For a little context, I left my job Friday, in marketing for a Fortune 500 company. They wanted to change my job (and everyone else's), so I after trying to work something out, I eventually decided it wasn't for me, and my last day is Dec. 2nd.

I don't want to panic and just take ANY full time job with a good title, only to find out I dislike it too. I found a nearby small office looking for some part time clerical/marketing work, which I'm not too good for, but I worry it would look weird on my resume and I may as well just stay unemployed.

Thoughts? My bosses promised to give me a glowing recommendation and help me find another job, and said I'm always welcome back to the company.

gaps on a resume never look good. But lying on those gaps is very easy to do. Just extend the time worked at a place or make up an employer.

As a general rule you NEVER leave an employer until you have another job lined up. It puts you in the drivers seat. Play your employer all you need to, they are not your friend.

Just keep hitting the phones and stuff until you get an interview somewhere you want to be.

This is terrible advice, especially given that OP is going for fortune 500 companies who will do background checks and anything they can't confirm gets reported - I know someone who had to signoff a hire despite the background check not being able to confirm that the candidate worked a paper round when he was 14 that was on his resume.

There's nothing wrong with a gap of a couple of months. It only starts looking bad if it's long enough to make people think "hmm, what did he spend this time doing?". If you're confident in your ability, you're better off spending a month searching for a job you want full time than having a job you don't really care about to distract you. Also, if you work a job for only a few months and then leave it, that looks worse than a gap, as it makes you look like the kind of guy who moves jobs a lot (unless you're a contractor).

I get "not leaving unless you have another job," but sometimes things are SO bad that you don't have a choice, especially once you're in full career mode. You're not in the driver's seat when your current employer has done something drastic and you're suddenly desperate to leave. It prevents you from doing any research, and you're suddenly just caught in the same problem - where you left one bad organization out of desperation, and are at the mercy of your new, possibly shitty organization.

And as >>1615443 said, if you do that, you're stuck, unless you want your resume to look like shit as you jump job to job, hoping to find the right one.

The only thing you can do wrong is wait too long, OP. I had money to burn and sat a year out dicking around while "finishing" my last course for university. My 2 years' experience means dick now and I'm almost 6 months out of the ceremony date, and 10 out of the on-paper graduation.
