1. Sort companies by sector
2. Find something that interests you, look at some companies
3. Look at what they do or what products they sell. Most have good explaining websites.
4. Look at earnings report for some random years, to identify what their main sources of income is, what their main sources of expenses are.
5. Identify triggers for either one. What will increase earnings/expenses? (Eg. demography change, dollar value change)
6. Look at quarterly reports, how are they doing according to expectations? What are the expectation for their triggers, short term and long term?
7. Finally look at stock price, dividends, and how the stock behaves. Is it trendy, or very media sensitive? Some stocks are very volatile and never pays dividends (many shipping and airlines), some are very stable and pays a nice dividend. ("Boring" companies, maybe some large REITs or industrials)
There are many choices. The most important are whether you're a short term speculations guy, or a long term investor.
Personally I buy and mostly never sell, because I pick stocks that are fairly stable and give me a cash flow that I can invest in other prospects
It doesn't have to be scary
