in 2006-2008 i supported myself from odd jobs making custom software and websites. i was working 3-5 days a month and living the life.

2008 crash made everyone tighten their fucking belt and work stopped coming so i had to find employment.

You don't really need to do anything as prep, except registering as self-employed with your country's tax agency if applicable. The hard part is marketing yourself.

Freelance programmer here. I'm in a western country and I'm decently good at what I do. I could be making a lot more money, but my business sense is shit and I end up taking underpaid projects from Asia.
