I've been curious at recycling of product and excess waste; is there a reason grocery companies DON'T donate expired product to food shelters? Not asking in a moral sense but I'm wondering if there is an actual reason like asset loss involved when companies donate?

>loss involved when companies donate?
donating is more expensive than disposing.

Demand for their products go down.

I assume it's a liability thing. They don't want to be held responsible for food which is improperly distributed.
Also like >>1609685 says, unless the homeless shelter has their own trucks to pick it up the waste, it's just an added cost on top of the dumpster/refuse service which they would still need.

i worked in a grocery store when i was 16, they donated almost expired stuff.

Expiration Dates.
They can still sell the food untill it reaches it's expiration date; after that it's cheaper too throw it in the trash. Think about the added logistics of distributing said food

If 5 homeless died from Listeria it would look pretty bad, expiry dates are for a reason

Giving away free shit decreases demand. Even homeless people buy food with the coppers they are tossed.

this. as a poor college student i would just wait to pick up all the nearly-expired food for free
