Thoughts on Amway and multilevel marketing in general?

It's very little known in my country and a friend of mine recently joined it. He has been repeating like a robot how you can become rich with it.
I refused his invitation to join him because I have my own business ideas that I'm developing and I would rather to have a business that it's truly of my own even if it's not that profitable.
But it left me thinking how it is on other countries

All MLMs are scams without exception. If it's an MLM, just walk away.

Someone please cap this:

Every MLM is a scam. There are no exceptions. Do SOME people make money? Well sure, but some people also enter a casino and make money as well. The point is that both are designed to put your money into their pocket. Two simple rules always expose an MLM for what it is. Rule number one: Why can't the salespeople just sell on commission? What this means is why can't the "members" just go out and sell the product and then get a percentage of product sold? The reason is they want to take YOUR money, not neccisarily sell product. Rule number two: If the product/service is so great why don't they just sell it directly to the public, i.e. in stores or online? The reason is they aren't really concerned with selling their product, they are concerned with YOU buying it. Psychologically they lure you with riches, and then if you fail they will blame you.

All MLM's are scams designed at taking desperate sucker's money.

Listen to me OP, the words I am about to say are the wisest and most truthful words you will ever hear. There is a dark side to pyramid schemes. Not that they scam you out of money, no no. Many Multi Level Marketing firms are actually cults. Yes, cults. If you study cults, and observe these companies, any idiot can see that it is a literal cult. I'm not trying to be funny "MONEY IZ RELIGUN!", no, when I say cult I'm not talking about religion, I'm talking about what psychologists call "High Control Groups".

Cults/high control groups all operate in strikingly similar ways. First comes the innocuous invitation to a dinner, "party", bible study group, meditation group, etc. then comes the love-bombing. Everyone is (suspiciously) nice to you, and because of this you associate the group with positive social feelings. Love is so addictive for a human. Next, they will have you perform as many tasks as they can. Long job interview form, scientology's "personality test", guided meditation, once they get you to do one thing you are more likely to do the next thing they said.

Then they break you. Make you do things you normally would never do. Maybe the cult will ask you to come to a dinner/event with them, they will pick you up so you can't drive yourself home. Or they will have "job training sessions", all day long "training" where you get up early in the morning, they "train" you all day long, and they don't even feed you. They might have the group do chants from the manual, all these repetitive tasks fatigue your brain. They make your brain feel dead and you don't even feel like a person any more. They will praise you for working so hard. Then the next thing you know you are doing what they say just so you can go home and rest. These are "thought-stopping" tactics, and if you think they don't work on you then congratulations, you are victim to the self-serving bias.

Once you have started down the path, they just keep making you take one more step. And each individual step doesn't seem that far. They will make you feel guilt. "There are children starving in Africa" or they will make you feel guilty for not working as hard as the others in the MLM cults. This keeps people on edge all the time, the fear that they could be fired if they don't work harder. There are many mind control tactics, and any pyramid schemer / cult leader worth his salt can use google to find these brainwashing methods. All cults will promise a prize, happieness, lots of money, the secrets to the universe, etc. this is because if you don't want anything from the cult they have no leverage on you. And this is how they threaten you: "if you don't follow this program, you will never be rich", "you will never be happy with your life", "I guess you don't want a happy life". You will be introduced to "success" stories of people in the cult who lives have completely changed. They use to be an alhoholic homeless man, now their life is the happiest ever, all thanks to the group. And last but not least, if you want to leave the group they will tell you something bad will happen to you if you leave. You'll go to hell, you'll get sick, you'll never get a good job, you'll be gay forever, etc. They instill this in you so whenever the idea of quitting comes aross your head, your mind automatically triggers a pain response.

You shouldn't be worried about getting scammed. You should be worried about your life getting taken over. Some marketing groups are not strict economical scams, but they are High Control Groups. You guys should learn more about cults, because it will make so much sense it will make your head spin.

I've seen the comparison to cults as well. You can compare MLM and Scientology with the praise they give people at higher ranks, the amount of money you are encouraged to spend (not only in the monthly product requirement, but also seminars and books), and the alienation of friends and family who are not in the scam.

There is also the self-help industry that oils and feeds off the people in these scams. Anyone who speaks at these MLM seminars I hold suspect like motivational speakers (e.g. Tony Robbins). I know Robbins is a hypnotist (NLP) scumbag so I am not surprised he has aligned himself with speaking at MLM conferences to con more people.

I think MLM is a more dangerous cult than Scientology because the latter has a reputation of being a cult and its membership is rather small (albeit wealthy). On the other hand, there are so many MLM companies and they don't have the stigma of being a cult (not as much as Scientology at least). Plus, where Scientology promises something ludicrous (psychic powers), MLM peddles the vehicle to becoming a millionaire.

This is literally 100% correct.

Not to say its policies are downright devilish. I can get making a profit from moronic normies but fucking up someone's health and lifestyle is insane. And the recruitment process is ridiculous.

I once met a Herbalife distributor who was in my dad's college football team. He kept pushing his agenda down me and my family's throat. Preaching about how the company was based on Christian foundations, as my parents are Christians the cuck thought this would set them up. Thankfully my parents are both STEM graduates so they didn't fell for this lunatic shilling. He outright lost his shit when i called bullshit on his cult company. Even questioned about the legitimacy of his arguments. Poor guy, was more brainwashed than CTR shills
