Algorithms that act as massive complex screening processes are just sped up versions of what people would do manually, the difference is when the algorithms are designed not to work in the market as a participant, but workin within the infastructure of the market to make money from the technical and mechanical inefficiencies of the market itself. They make money from spreads, quote stuffing, price oscillations that eventually break the price structure, manipulation of prices, and a whole bunch of other shit that isnt actually part of the stock market itself. These computers and algorithms likely dont even try and process the supply and demand changes in securities and are only interested is the physical inefficiencies of the market to exploit.
