If you short a stock starting at 4, and it drops to 2 = you made 2 dollars (50% increase)

If you short a stock starting at 4, and it goes up to 8 = you lost 4 dollars (100% loss)

You wouldn't divide it, you would be wiped out 100% in that case.

I say don't short unless you have the money to gamble. A 10 dollar stock can only cost you 10 dollars if it goes bust, but a shorted stock can increase multiple times and cost you over 100 dollars for your 10.
