Yes and no. As the others mentioned, it was understandable but that doesn't make it inherently justifiable. I think the main thing to take away from this is he didn't do it JUST because he was high out of his mind but actually had a semi-normal motivation, which at least suggests he might not be nearly as far off the rails as his public persona would suggest.
