Do you have to dedicate your heart and soul to small fractional percentage trades every minute to make it big?

Looks like I had a fundamental misunderstanding of Forex trading

I thought I put X amount up for Y amount of other currency and then you have Y amount of other currency

Yet account looks like nothing changed... I need to go read a book
