Is LinkedIn mandatory nowadays?
My friends are trying to convince me to sign up to help my job search. Generally speaking I'm very anti-social networks and would rather not.
Anyone have advice?

I don't have LinkedIn and still found a job. I guess it depends on the HR department. Talking face-to-face is actually the best way to find a job since people see resumes all damn day and you just become a number.

It can only help. Even if it doesn't land you your first job people may still find you even if you aren't looking. A higher paying job may come your way without you even trying.

I find linked in helpful, depends upon the job your looking for though

it's just a place to have a resume with pic and testimonials/reference dude. you don't have to talk or network and shit.

This.
Occasionally I get random "friend requests" from people I've worked with, but I've never actually interacted with anyone on there. It's not for that.
For me anyways, it's just pretty convenient to have a place for your resume online so you don't forget which subfolder you last hid it in 3 years ago when you want to switch jobs.
