It's official /biz/, I'm graduating with my associate's next semester! Worked hard to pay for school, have no debt, have a car, and will now have a 2 year degree. Working as an assistant manager at albertsons atm, but at 21 I think I'm doing fine.

Next step is part-timing my bachelor's for the next 3 year in order to build work experience and get my degree.

Just out of curiosity, with a bachelor's in business and 5 years of lower management experience (if everything goes well), will I be a significant candidate in mid-management applications?

when you say mid-management do you mean department head? GM? DM? Shift manager at Pizza Hut?

Either way your experience is probably going to weigh more than your degree. Do well, get promoted, learn your job. It's easiest to get hired doing something you've already done.

If I need a GM I look for people that have run stores before. I'm not going to promote some assistant that never made manager. Or if I do I'm going to promote them from within so I know what I'm getting.

GM and DM are basically my goals. I don't have extremely high aspirations, a bachelor's degree should be enough in my life to end up in mid-level management. Middle management, in my opinion at least, is like an operations or district manager, or a manager of a specific head that's higher than your run of the mill store manager, such as an HR or marketing manager.

Like I said before, I don't have extremely high aspirations, once I'm done with my bachelor's I plan on being done period. 6 years of school is enough, I've been working full time throughout all of it. If anything I'll just raise my way through the ranks of respectable businesses. I may never reach the executive level, but if I end up making anything north of 90k a year I'll be satisfied.

Main question is, especially for you managers or business owners out there, is 5 years of lower management (assistant manager and possibly store manager if I'm lucky) and a bachelor's in business enough to wiggle my way into mid-level district manager positions. At what point, rather, should I start applying for these positions with confidence of getting hired?

There's too many variables to say. A lot of it will depend on the company and the industry you work in.

one thing you control is your performance. If you consistently make your boss tons of money without doing anything shady there's always potential for advancement. Lots of people spend their entire career as GM's though. Doing good work but nothing spectacular.

The problem is that most people that are capable of regularly producing large growth and profit almost always wind up going into business for themselves. You can only make so many millions for other people before you decide to make some for yourself.

I suppose, but I don't think it applies to large retail stores. I'd imagine I won't be making large sums of money as a store manager, but rather keeping operations running smoothly.

Mid level management is the golden spot of making decent money while not doing excessive schooling. Basically my dream job, though I bet in 15 years I could feel different and want my MBA.
