I saw that Rich Dad Poor Dad thread earlier and wanted to start a topic about how to NOT pay out your ass for knowledge. Over the past few months I've been trying to make a career switch from finance into IT. There are so many sites and resources available for cheap or even free, I can't fathom why anyone would spend thousands on a stupid seminar. Pic related- I've spent a lot of time on Khan Academy's intro courses to stuff like HTML and Java. Most recently I got a $9/month subscription to Linux Academy, which is pretty dope. Aside from that I spend a lot of time on YouTube and at the library. What about you guys?

Same here OP. University of Google is free and everyone is enrolled. I also use Lynda.com and recommend it.

I've learned more from Google searching than anything else combined. Stack Overflow has been such a tremendous help to me while learning coding or anything with the command line. I have a mentor who I can call for help, but usually never do because with a little searching I can find whatever I need. What courses have you taken on Lynda?
>>
>>1440118
I had to learn Visio and Project for my job (process design consultant; bank operations guy), so I watched a few of the videos to get familiar with the programs. I think my boss is going to pass along more data analysis work to me too, so I'll cruise Google to learn more about it (like how to use jmp on Excel)
>>
>>1440142
There's a lot you can do with Excel. I've been using it for years at school and work, but went through the lessons on Excel Exposure and still learned a lot. Ever thought about getting into Python or R for data analysis? Data Camp is pretty good for both of those.

Didn't know about linux academy, neat

I am In IT, want into finance, you people are retards. That being said:

I am pro-cert. While I believe you don't need them and there are terrible people that have them, they are like crack for HR and if you want to do better than I play with it at home then I guess you are testing.

cbtnuggets - expensive, shit community, good videos. All the level 1 shit can be torrented.
udemy - literally steals content. Bunch of the pluralsight people are currently raging. So read quality for cheap, but you are literally paying a pirate
pluralsight - my next renewal. I am hoping for good
safari bookshelf - 5 slot bookshelf will get you some good books. Recommending Laramie should you want to be an network monkey
Packt Publishing (or Mapt) - monthly subscription is on the cheaper side. The materials I have been through feel unfinished. Good resource if you want to learn enough to learn more, but I tend to use to only for finding answers to things that require more than one paragraph.

Microsoft - hot certs currently. inb4 shitposting I do have my LPIC-1
Don't cheap out - $20 a month for any resource is worth it.
>>
>>1441657
What do you do in IT? I'm looking at going for my LPIC. Do you have any thoughts on Red Hat certification?
>>
>>1441661
Title is cyber security, but I am just an IT monkey that hosts 5 meetings a week and shitposts emails for 40% of the day.

Red Hat - I like it a lot, but that is highly area specific as it isn't valued at anything worthwhile in North America except the south-eastern states. I see a crazy specialist market for tying it with a cert for SAN or storage management as data-centers don't realize they need this yet.
>>
>>1441664
and you just have LPIC-1?

Honestly that sounds great. I've worked in finance for a few years and spent most of my days basically doing glorified data entry. I like IT, would definitely rather shitpost and make up stuff to my peers for most of the day.

guys where can I learn book keeping? I literally have no idea what I'm doing, I bought a beginners book on it and it helped a little, Google results just confuse the fuck outta me.

Also, how do you price goods/services?
>>
>>1441681
>Google results just confuse the fuck outta me

what do you mean? I don't know any specific ones but I'm sure you could google "online book keeping course" and go from there.

I've found coursereport.com to be good for reviews, not sure if they only do IT courses though.

BCIS, CEH, CCENT

Thing is I just was lucky. Worked help desk, applied for a job that somebody linked to a facebook group. I didn't need any of it because I work in a remote area and willing to travel. Seems security folk are dainty.

>khan academy
the guy is super annoying tho, he is talking and talking and switches topics and pauses and rambles a lot. he is repetitive and long winded also.
not recommending for style and easy comprehension.
it's free well i still think it's shit.
>>
>>1441778
also bad quality vids horrible sound on many depressing too.
>>
>>1441778
So its only one guy on the whole website?
>>
>>1441879
dunno i only looked the investing economy section.
the rest is pretty unrelated to this board.
>>
>>1440035
I just make sure I have positive cash flow. Watching youtube and learning calculus is useless unless you are sure it will increase your profit in the long run
>>
it's good for refreshing and quizzing your math skills.
>>
>>1442384
>Watching youtube and learning calculus is useless
it's only useless to learn new things if you don't actually learn anything.
