I'm just now learning to manage my money and I want to put this 55k I've got sitting in my checking account somewhere more useful.

And how much money have you invested with what return rate? That's what I thought fucktard. OP, Vanguard is better than Fidelity on most types of funds. Just make sure to diversify efficiently and don't be scared of high-yield bond funds for decent returns during volatile periods for equities. Enjoy.
