I'ma major in Finance, good idea? I wanna work on Wall Street and be Patrick Bateman. What should I start learning this summer before university starts?
>>

Sure. Go for it.

Also, buy trumpcoin.
>>
>>1355651
read 'liar's poker' by michael lewis.
>>
>>1355651

Where are you located? If you are in NYC then Finance is a great field as long as you're ready to put some work into it.
>>
>>1355668

Texas, but maybe for my masters I can go up to NY
>>
>>1355651
Focus less on striving for the roles of fictional characters, and more on bettering yourself.
>>
>>1355666
Agreed. Also read The Snowball. It's a good to understand you must be humble. Buffett didn't start out working on Wall Street after graduation. Enjoying a ham sammich and a Coke is better than spending $100 on steak and wine. Buffett ridicules Wall Street especially when he has to save Salomon Brothers.

>>1355676
>Texas

You are gonna be so far behind from the Ivy League finance students.

>>1355727
This. Patrick Bateman is a fictional character. American Psycho fantasizes with Wall Street, the 80s, and murder. Those three are not alike. Working on Wall Street is getting up at 5am to go to work and then come home at 10pm. Rinse and repeat everyday with optional work days on Saturday and Sunday.
>>
>>1355668
How is the job market for finance? I heard that the market really got downsized.
>>
>>1355848
Yeah, my brother is a Managing Director at JP Morgan and he works 20 hours a day, every day.

Does anyone know how to calculate taxes of a point break analysis?
I'm in a big pickle with this one, so help is much appreciated.

>You are gonna be so far behind from the Ivy League finance students.

I've wondered about this. Say you go to a top tier university in a small town rural area. Are you fucked for top investment banking and finance jobs?

I don't know about American universities but an example of a remote but prestigious university here in the uk would be St Andrews.
It often ranks as the third best UK university just behind Oxford and Cambridge. Good upper class and royal links. But it's in a tiny town in the middle of nowhere on the Scottish coast.

I know there are successful London financiers who studied there and yet they can't have been doing internships before graduation surely? London is about an eight hour drive away, and that's best case.
>>
>>1355651

Go intern somewhere to see if you actually like.

Most careers, people think the job is a certain way, and then when they do it, it's very different from what they thought.

Don't waste your time, until you have tried something, and are sure its what you want.
>>
>>1355873
In the US top tier universities aren't located in small rural areas simply because they are top teir universities. if you go somewhere in a rural area you aren't going to a top tier university.

All the Ivies are East Coast, you've got Stanford in NorCal, UChicago in, of course, Chicago, John's Hopkins in Baltimore, Georgetown in DC, USC/UCLA in LA, etc.

If a school isn't good enough to bring businesses, thus making it not rural nowhereville, over to it then it's not top tier.

>>1355651
Texas is a shitty place to be if you want to end up in Wallstreet. No idea what school you're going to, but I wouldn't imagine you being able to end up at Wallstreet after college unless you go to Rice or maybe SMU. If you are going to a CC try to transfer to NYU or anything really on the East Coast. Otherwise you're next best option is going to grad school at one of the Ivies, NYU, etc. with a good finance grad program.

I have plans to enter UC Berkeley's Haas undergrad program. Should I stick with my Finance Major track or should I switch over to economics?
>>
First question:

Can you get into Columbia Business school?

If not, you're better off being an accountant
>>
>>1356761
I'm sure you know but Haas is super competitive. What is your career goal?
>>
>>1356820
At this point, I'm not very sure. I've originally had plans to work on Wall Street or the similar, but after reading Thiel's "zero to one", I've somewhat became interested in startups. I have a journal in which I've written several pages of business ideas, and I think it would be cool to turn one of them into a reality.

I'm also a pretty big economics fan (I've been reading the WSJ, Economist, and occasional Bloomberg articles pretty much everyday for the past few years).

So in terms of career path, somewhat vague.
>>
make sure u get straight A's and an internship

>and be Patrick Bateman

Did you not read the book/watch the movie? If you did, you should have paid better attention, because you missed a very significant detail about it.
>>
>>1355848
So I take it you've worked on """"The Street""""? How are the job interviews?
>>
>>1356257
That's interesting. Admittedly most of the top universities here are in cities too, but there are exceptions.

So if you want a job in high finance is it absolutely essential to go to a university close to a financial center? For the sake of internships and local business links and so on.
>>
>>1357041
Nah. I went to a state school. My wife went to MIT and works on Wall Street. I work at a non-profit/NGO near the UN for free.
>>
>>1357025
That he was born into it.
>>
You do understand the difference between reality and the fictional world of film and literature? Like in Videodrome you've seen it?

As someone in the finance field its Not nearly as glamorous as people make out. Although the money is sometimes good.
>>
>>1357358
What does your wife work as?
>>
>>1357378
No, that the whole thing occurred only in his own head. He was a boring, unhappy loser, and creating a violent fantasy world in his mind was how he coped with it. It worked, but eventually he got to the point where he couldn't distinguish it from reality anymore, which caused it to fall apart.
>>
>>1359320
I even question if that he is actually an investment banker on Wall Street. For all we know, he's just a single white guy who lives at home eating chicken tendies masturbating to anime porn stumping for Trump.

You don't compare everyone's business cards during work. You don't eat out at fancy restaurants. American Psycho is the worst representation of Wall Street. I mean The Wolf of Wall Street is a far superior film.
>>
>>1360066
It was what M&A was like during the 80s. I don't care if you weren't there or don't believe me, it's fact. Get over it kiddos, you missed the gravy train.
>>
>>1355873
Aren't ICL/UCL/Warwick the other three to make the '5 Targets'.

St Andrews would be in the same tier as Durham or Lancaster.
>>
>>1360096
What? Are you talking banking target schools or school rankings generally?
For banking target schools LSE jumps to the top spot, outranking Oxford and Cambridge even.

I don't think you're correct either way.
>>
>>1360240
I think LSE, Oxbridge, UCL and Warwick are generally the banking target unis - at least in my experience.
>>
>>1357358
swear to god everyone from MIT ends up on wall street. I'm applying to the Sloan school this cycle and pretty dmuch plan on moving to NYC sooner rather than later.
>>
>>1360086
I'm sure you were there for the gravy train, and that's why you're on one of 4chan's lamest boards.

I didn't miss shit. I fucking hate NYC. I hate all big cities. I'd love to go live in the mountains, or on an island somewhere. Maybe even Antarctica. Anywhere the fuck away from civilization.
