Companies can take weeks to follow up.
But don't wait on them. Keep pitching other companies.
If a week has passed since you heard anything, you can do a phone call.
What type of company? If a start-up, sending a follow-up to express your interest can help big time, because they are looking to hire fast.
If a bigger place, you're sort of stuck in their hiring cycle.
BUT, you can reach out to appropriate people on LinkedIn and try to network for that position. Maybe not your direct contact, but you could contact another of the similar position and try to flirt about the position. It works, trust me.
Might not if it isn't urban

It's Bechtel, a fat engineering company. I actually got scouted on linkdin. Does this really work? Should I upload a picture, or will I just look like a tremendous fag?

Oh I'm familiar with Bechtel! :-D
FWIW, I'm in NYC working in the tech start-up scene. It definitely works here, but my job search process was more scatter shot. Are you in NO? TX?
As for the pic, do you mean LinkedIn? It doesn't hurt dude. Up north, it hurts NOT to have it. LinkedIn is like a publicly verifiable resume, for one. Lots of places check the resume you send against your LI, or so I've heard.
What sort of position you doing?

Make ready engineer, in NC. I'm excited to work with them because I'll be doing work for google too. I guess I'll take a picture.
