Anyone here have any advice for a dumb international biz student who would love to work in the video game's industry?

I know, I know, video games. But I'd be lying if I said it wasn't my passion. I'm specifically looking for advice from anyone who has worked in analytics, marketing, producing, finance or anything else business-related in an entertainment media field. Next year I'll be a Junior and aiming at an internship or two to get my feet wet and see what I do or don't enjoy. I'm currently working night audit at a hotel, fast food before that, and I volunteer on the side all in an effort to build my resume.

God, really? Gaming is a bad choice, hours are long, pay is low, and once you're in, you're stigmatized.

I worked for Midway in Chicago. In the early days it was awesome, towards the end it became hell. However the important take away from it was, unless you are actually a game dev, you can pretty much forget what industry you are in.

Even the marketing guys were nearly totally removed from the fact they worked for a video game company. It becomes just any other job. I was IT and the closest I ever came to "working in video games" was hooking up and unhooking Xboxs and PS2's for the testers. Otherwise I might as well have been working for any other random company

Dont work in video games because you like video games, unless you plan on being a dev... in which case, you are a stronger person than I am

Just get into normal software development. The hours and pay are definitely better than gaming. Those game devs get shit on.

really? is this a real post?

The pay and treatment of the workers in any field is determined by supply and demand. Glitz fields in general whether entry level ad-agency jobs for girls, or game-dev jobs for boys treat these people like shit because they can. If you dare complain, there is a lime through the door of idiots willing to take your job.
