**ATTENTION CRYPTO-COINERS**
THIS IS THE OFFICIAL CRYPTO-CURRENCY THREAD.

/biz/ is for all things business and finance, some of us coiners consistently create much too many unnecessary threads which seem to often dominate the board.
To respect all users of /biz/, I kindly ask all crypto-coiners to direct their discussion about
Bitcoin, Ether, Lisk, DAO, TRUMP, RISE, WAVES Sia etc. to this thread and and keep it in this thread in order to prevent the crypto community from becoming more hated than it already is.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Great use of quints. I personally would take these shitcoins a little more seriously if they were confined to one thread like this. PND did something similar and had a Doge/PND general a year or so ago. The funny thing is that after they did this, nobody bothered them and nocoiners didnt shit all over them. Shilling is a lot like drinking wine. Its fun and celebratory when tastefully done but despised and mocked when sloppy and excessive.

This. Not to mention how redundant bitcucks on /biz/ are. I filtered out the words "cope" and "suicide watch" a long time ago. I almost filtered out the word bitcoin entirely because that fag is so annoying but I still like to hear whats going on with it from time to time so I didn't. I love the concept of bitcoin but I hate the edgy fedora wearing crowd that comes with it.

Thanks guys that's what I was going for. I want this community to have constrictive conversation because I've seen it happen before. But without structure many people just make a thread without thinking to check the catalog and every topic and coiner is fragmented to hell. I hope to make this a regular general with an active /biz/ community just like the robinhood and stock threads.

So since there seems to be all of this speculation on the halvening, BTC price could go either to the moon or to shit, what do you think will happen?

Following on this, is it wise to invest in cryptos right now since a BTC crash would be devistating to all altcoins?
>>
>>1289510
Everyone would convert to ETH, I mean coinbase's newly branded exchange is going to be promoting ETH while downplaying Bitcoin, they're just ahead of the game. They own 10% of the world's bitcoins. So moral of the story invest in ETH.

that is less than $2 mate. get at least 10 bucks into it at a time, $20 is ideally a minimum. the bigger you buy orders, the more the price rises. you see 5Trump buy & sells that are bots that don't move the price. big number buys move the market, especially when volume is low as it currently is.
$20 today is $100 next month.

mostly because there are others buying as well.

>>
>>1291728

Wrong. $FCT, $TRUMP, $VRC, $RBR, waves. These are the only ones i've found that I expect to outperform btc/eth.

Which will perform better between btc and eth I have no idea so i'm not gonna choose one of the two to recommend. Compared to fiat you'll be doing good with either.

>>1291743
By my TA the train just left the station. Litecoin won't rally against btc in the shortterm. There'll probably be a slight retracement back to 0.084 very soon at which point i'm selling. Or the more likely scenario I get stopped out at 0.082.

Idc what happens just make it happen fast. fucking chinese need to start pumping or dumping. Also the roadmaps etc is just bs, it wont be coming in the short term and it probably wont matter. Might indeed be a good entry possibility in ltc again in a couple of weeks, i'll stay out though.

also a limited is the exact form of corporation that you can't trust for shit when it comes to money. since the liability is greatly LIMITED in case it goes bankrupt.

saying shit like it looks more trustworthy than hashocean is my other problem if you look at the numbers hashocean is already unbelievably profitable. ahash is just ridiculously so.

imagine what people thought of hashocean first year.

I have $7.58 in it out of the .5 btc I bought last month, that's a decent risk to take.

the profitability is 1400% per year, very far fetched, but there's no harm in making a small deposit and periodically withdrawing every 2 months or so.

as long as you have money in it it will mine for the amount you initially put in.

it's okay to me if you say hey this looks hyip and i tried it, but don't say bullshit like trustworthy! when it comes to these sites they come and go constantly most likely the same crime organization is behind them i don't even find unplausible that hashocean gets the bitcoins funneled from short lived scams to rip the market really off by building up the appearances of stability and longevity. short games and one big long scam there is some beauty in that if you think about it.

If you are using bank account or credit as your source of USD, you can buy BTC at coinbase and circle.com. Circle also accepts debit cards, coinbase does not.

Refer to the "Buy Bitcoin" section of the OP for more sites.

a lot of bureaucracy is needed if you want something trustworthy, but you can also use Paxful

Buy the vrc/btc dip that is currently happening

$vrc will be hitting 15k within a 10 days and that's only the start. I'm bullish up to at least 30k on this coin.

fwiw i bought at 6-7k, sold half at 11.5k and then bought more at 10.5k-9.1k. This is the coin im currently most bullish on by far on the 1 month time span

I saw Donald Trump at a grocery store in Manhattan yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person,

but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for specifics on his policies about fiat or the federal reserve.
He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”
I was taken back, and all I could say was “Gold Standar...” but he kept cutting me off and going “TrumpCoin! TrumpCoin! TrumpCoin!”

and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle with the secret services as I walked off.

When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen American Flag Zebra Cakes in his hands without paying

The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.”
At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.

When she took one of the cakes and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me.

I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each cake and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

just buy some ethereum.

then buy some ICO's

I'm treating this as the beginning of a HUGE boom like the dotcom boom. I'm literally buying anything and everything that looks decent and then reinvest the profits as fast as possible in the next thing.

I think i will make multiple millions in 3 years by doing this. currently up to $30,000 from a $400 investment without even really trying. now I will get serious. I'm going to put 10btc in to the next promising ICO hopefully multiply it by 10 thats $60,000 / 100BTC then put that in to the next crowdsale $600,000 rinse and repeat.

ok coinshitters, riddle me this

1. what are some practical and real world applications of cryptos in the near term. so far we have drugs and chinks avoiding capital controls. what else is there, and why wouldn't I use fiat currency? for the sake of argument, lets assume i don't give a shit about being anonymous.

2. how do you know what to invest in when every week a new altcoin/some other bs is announced. ie, Lisk/Rise, BTC/LTC/ETC/etc
>>
>>1300346
Invest in all of them. There's a high chance of making money. The whole sector is growing.
>>
>>1300363
>The whole sector is growing.

why? what does it offer apart from drugs and capital control avoidance?

i don't disagree that it's growing, but what are the fundamental reasons beyond the above two? what happens if china relaxes capital controls?
>>
>>1300369
There is a shit load of industries that are ripe for disruption. That draws in speculators the whole thing grows. A few of these cryptos will be YUGE in a year or two. It's about riding them to the moon
>>
>>1300371
can you name any? this is the third time in one thread i've asked for specific real world applications beyond the two i've mentioned.

so what?

having a relationship with a bank is beneficial to most businesses. i'm a minor partner in a small hosting company, we recently got a sizable loan from our bank that allowed us to automate some of our systems and save $40k p/a in staffing. why do we care that it's centralized?

i've never heard a CEO say "gee, if only banking was decentralized".

how often is it an issue in your life?
>>
>>1300426
every day.
>>
>>1300426
it's a constant burden on my life
>>
>>1300426

Yeah this is the one glaring flaw that I see with Bitcoin and other crypto currencies. There's just no reason for something like Bitcoin to exist at all. Outside of the "deep web," there's just no reason for an online merchant like Amazon to accept Bitcoin. I don't see its practical application. All I see is an experiment, an incredibly fascinating experiment, but an experiment nonetheless.

It may even be a profitable experiment for some, but at some point I do believe the bubble will burst again. When it becomes obvious that Bitcoin isn't going anywhere and it's not going to take the world by storm as some amazing new currency and it's only worth what we think it's worth, and everyone gets idiot shivers, it will be worth nothing. It will burst.

>gee, if only banking was decentralized

kek
>>
>>1300462
what is it like to live with a crippling lack of insight in to what really matters?
>>
>>1300462
these are my thoughts exactly. i don't see any business drivers that will make it a long term success.

amazon may well accept bitcoins one day, but it will be through partnering with an exchange like most other places. it doesn't cost them much to implement, so why turn down neet bucks?

ride the bubble if that's your thing. many people have made money doing the same thing in the past, nothing wrong with that.

>>1300463
all you've added to the discussion if vague bullshit, piss off.
>>
>>1300462
Take an economics course. Bit coin has drastically lower transaction costs then the traditional payment/settlement network.
>>
I'm still unemployed but I made a $60 profit for one BTC in a fucking day, Jesus christ, should we buy before it hits $1000??!!?

Can we blame Localbitcoins for this?
>>
>>1300470
whats the cost to convert your fiat to bitcoin, and for the receiving party to convert it to fiat?

what happens when banks lower their fees?
what happens when the banks implement their own networks, between themselves?

it's like we live in an alternate universe where banks are powerless and can't possibly accommodate a changing market.
>>
>>1300472
the whole idea is you don't convert it to fiat you spend it as bitcoin
>>
>>1300470
>"Hey you guys think we should switch over to Bitcoin? Transaction costs are lower!"
>"Can we take out a Bitcoin loan or line of credit to expand our business?"
>"No."
>"Can we recover our Bitcoins if hacked?"
>"Probably not."
>"Lower transaction costs you say?.....Yeah let's do it!"

A conversation that will never, ever happen.
>>
>>1300475
what company is going to keep bitcoins? which individual will put their job on the line to save on transaction costs?

can you pay your suppliers in bitcoins?
can you pay your employees?

your options are to either convert it to fiat and eat the transaction fees, or buy a kilo of cocaine and sell that for fiat.
>>
>>1300481
Right? Is this guy for real? There's no reason to switch over to Bitcoin or even accept Bitcoin. Centralization may not be anonymous, but I can do things with fiat that I simply cannot with Bitcoin. And there comes a certain amount of security in addition to that. Why would a business want to lose those things for lower transaction costs? Ridiculous
>>
>>1300426
bitcoins cant be inflated, dollars can. See Zimbabwe, Wiemar Germany, or Venezuela for examples. The Dollar has lost 95% of its value since 1913.
>>
>>1300426
Banking used to be decentralized in the US. They held their own reserves of gold and if they went bust it was only the single bank that went out of business instead of the entire economy a la 2008.
>>
>>1300535
what does inflation and 1913 have to do with anything? business doesn't let cash sit idle, it gets invested or spent. if anything, this is a benefit of fiat as circulation is better than having those with money sit on it.

what would happen to the price of BTC if China relaxed capital controls? it may not be inflation, but the effect on your investment would be the same. buy gold/hard assets if you want to hedge against inflation, not coins.

>1. what are some practical and real world applications of cryptos in the near term.

>mfw not one has been named
>>
>>1300554
You asked what's wrong with the current system that cryptos fixes. You cannot print more bitcoins but the fed can print more dollars.
>>
>>1300557
Eth offers trustless contracts and crowdfunding, btc is decentralized and limited, waves is a platform for tokenizing fiat currency for transactions on the block chain
>>
>>1300554
and inflation is not a benefit. It forces people to spend money they otherwise would not and deisentivizes saving, savings being key for investment
>>
>>1300559
And the same is true for gold and oil. So we need Bitcoin becauseeeeee.... ?

>>1300563
I'm still not seeing any real world applications here.
>>
Not to sound like an idiot but how exactly do you make money with bitcoins?

Buy products that accept bitcoins then sell them on amazon?
>>
>>1300602
Thats because you lack insight in to these matters
>>
>>1300607
Buy some, the price goes up, sell them
>>
>>1300559
Look, here's the thing. For something to have real, actual value, it must not only have a fixed quantity but it must have some practical, real world application or purpose as well. It must fulfil some need.

Gold is not just a shiny metal that someone picked out of the ground and decided was valuable one day. It has always had some real world application and it has more applications today than ever before, and that is why it's valuable.

Fixed, limited quantity + Purpose/Application = Value as a commodity or resource

Wood is valuable despite there being so much of it and despite its being a renewable resource because its applications are so many. It's valuable, but not very. (Just had wood delivered for the stove, relatively cheap too, so that's why I'm thinking of it.)

Gold and oil are not renewable and there's a fixed amount of each. They have numerous applications and that makes gold and oil more valuable than, say, wood.

My point is that even when something is plentiful it can still have value when its applications are so many. But it doesn't work in reverse. Just because something is so few in quantity does not make it valuable without it fulfilling some need.

That part of the equation is quite crucial, and Bitcoin falls into neither category. It's not plentiful but extraordinarily useful and it's not limited and useful either. It has no intrinsic value as a resource, commodity, or currency. There's no need for it. The guy who joked that he's never heard anyone say "if only banks were decentralized" struck at the heart of it, really. He's right.

Look, I hope everyone makes a lot of money from Bitcoin. I really do. I've got friends raving every day about how much money they're making, and I'm happy for them. (I'll be even happier for them when they cash out.) But it's just an experiment. That's all it is. It's a speculative "currency" with no real application and no intrinsic value as anything else at this point. That's not good.
>>
>>1300611
Oh OK.
>>
>>1299655
woah! I don't even know where i can trade for such things :P
thnx though!
>>
>>1300559
>>1300643

And, granted, Bitcoin is a "currency" and not a commodity or resource, but the principle is nearly the same. If Bitcoin is going to compete with the other currencies, then Bitcoin will need to do virtually everything that a fiat currency can do and more.

But it doesn't do more. It does less. And in its place it offers fixed quantity and some degree of anonymity and "decentralization" which, frankly, aren't enough to make it valuable in its own right.

Right now anyone holding Bitcoin can probably order drugs or gamble online. They can't buy groceries with it, pay their electric bill with it, invest it into anything else (without first converting it back into fiat). It's just a weird, quirky, autofellatiating currency for the sole purpose of investing....in itself. It's an experiment.

Ride the bubble, man. Make some money. Go for it. But if you seriously think that Bitcoin is a useful thing in its own right, well...

I'm not bothered by it. In my other post, I said as much.

I've got friends riding the bubble and doing quite well, and I'm happy for them. I make money my way, and they make money theirs, and as long as everyone's making money, it's a beautiful thing.

I stated my opinion regarding Bitcoin's future and was told to retake an economics class, and I thought I would expand upon my initial comments so as to better elaborate and remove any ambiguity.

I'm not Warren Buffet. I'm not a genius investor, and, furthermore, I'm not a psychic so for all I know, Bitcoin could have a tremendously bright future. But to say (or suggest) that Bitcoin is already intrinsically useful and valuable and to imply that I must be the uneducated one for not seeing it, yeah, I think that's worth refuting.

Your posts reek of "I've missed out on btc and I'm so butt hurt I've decided to write a novel with nothing but nonsense"

Pretty much
>>
>>1300679
lol dewd.
Nobody said you 're uneducated. There is not an education issue. I don't even see cryptocurrency as a life investment but i think it's a nice hobby. Plus it could turn out to be really helpful if things turn horribly wrong where I live. Who knows?

>>1299655
p.s. i don't think i'm really ready for trading.. I'll go mining for a while ^^ (if i find time to understand how everything works and what kind of stuff I need)
>>
>>1300702
Yeah that must be it
>>
>>1300727
No I hear you, man. It's not that I "missed out" on Bitcoin or that I think it's an altogether stupid "investment." Intellectually speaking, it's about honesty.

What you just said was absolutely reasonable, honest, and logical. You don't know what will happen but you think it's worth exploring. That makes sense to me and I respect that.

But others here have been making some pretty extraordinarily claims that, frankly, cannot be substantiated.

It's one thing to say, "You know what? I don't know if there's a future in this thing but I think I can make a few bucks riding this bubble."

And it's entirely another to say "Bitcoin is a novel idea with a bright future and everyone's going to adopt it because there's so little of it and it's a fixed amount and it's decentralized and all of that means it will exponentially grow in value forever and ever"

And that's BASICALLY what some of the people here would have you believe. And that's just ridiculous
>>
>>1300702
Oh and thanks for refuting my claims by the way.

That's sarcasm...because you didn't.

>>1300727
wut i said time? not time. I meant to say mood
>>
>>1300643
You are implying that something digital isn't real. Couldn't it be said that it's intrinsic value is that it is not physical? There's a lot more value in bitcoin than you say. The architecture allows you to make contracts, escrow, crowdfund, etc all for very little cost. In other words without lawyers.

That might not be something I would ever need in the US, but if I wanted to crowdfund a business in Ghana I could actually do it, and people have done it.

But fundamentally, something is not a resource until humans turn it into one. It used to be considered bad to strike oil hundreds of years ago because there was no human use for it, just a messy waste of time when trying to build something.

Fiat currency is relatively stable in the first world, so most people have no use for cryptocurrency. However that is not the case everywhere, which is why it is so popular in places like China and Venezuela. No one is here to force you to use bitcoin and it might even make sense for you to continue to use fiat if you are in the first world.
>>
>>1300602
If you cannot see any real world application in what I said then you're either a troll or a high functioning retard. If you don't see any value in the tech don't use it--no one will force you to.

I think CPU mining can be profitable if you run everything fast enough. I was going to make 10 dollars a month mining it, but I needed the compute power for other purposes, so I never bothered with it.

>>1299617
Don't bother with mining unless you get power for free. Just buy stuff with your own money and listen to >>1299655

im pretty sure running a CPU 100% for a month will cost more than 10$ in power bills

If crypto is so great, then why are all the top investors not investing in it, and I'm talking about the top.

These are mostly old guys of course. Buffet, Soros, etc. Is the technology just too much for them or do they think its a meme? Should I just invest in rare metals or is crypto really the new thing that will produce the 21st century millionaires

why can't you name some?

what have we seen so far
> muh inflation
there's already solutions for that. ps. inflation is caused by more than money being printed.
> muh transaction fees
there are fees converting from/to btc/fiat, same shit different smell, plus you have the added risk of violatility.
> muh decentralization
nobody has been able to explain why business cares

it's fucking hilarious. all you do is sit back and call people retards but you have no fucking clue how cryptos are useful beyond regurgitating a few buzzwords you read on bitcointalk.
>>
>>1301578
Inflation is defined as the increase in the money supply. Printing money is to inflation as punching someone in the face is to assault. Learn to google, I know you're not slow enough that typing is a challenge.

Transferring large amounts of money will cost you significantly less with bitcoin. The idea is to use it instead of fiat so you don't have to convert, but I realize that would be hard to figure out for someone with a double digit iq.

Businesses care about decentralization for the same reason that you don't invest all your retirement fund into a single stock. If someone loses their bitcoin wallet or malinvests, only they will be effected. If the dollar goes to shit, or banks start throwing housing loans to the average negro who walks through the door, everyone in the economy suffers the consequences, not just businesses.

You should consider getting a vasectomy. It's not that difficult to understand.
>>
>>1301758
>Inflation is defined
where did i define deflation? i talked about causes, and secondly, as you requested, from google: a general increase in prices and fall in the purchasing value of money.

doesn't say shit about increase of money supply, which is just one single fucking cause of inflation.

>The idea is to use it instead of fiat so you don't have to convert
fucking laughable, if i have no interest in buying drugs, what do i use it for? can i pay my rent with it? can i fill up my car? buy food and clothes? can businesses pay their employees and suppliers in bitcoins? even if i'm able to do any of those things my choices are severely limited. try living a non-neet lifestyle for a month on bitcoins and tell me how you go.

do you realise that none of the large companies that 'accept' bitcoins (dell/msoft, etc) actually take bitcoins? they partner with a btc exchange which takes takes the bitcoins, and pays out in USD/whatever. they'll take your neet coins, but they don't want to have anything to do with them. why do you think this is the case?

>If the dollar goes to shit, or banks start throwing housing loans to the average negro

what happens if bitcoin goes to shit? what happens if china relaxes capital controls?
what happens if the network can't cope with the number of transactions or some other limitation/bug gets hit?

decentralisation has nothing to do with any of this. the idea the bitcoin is risk free compared to fiat is absurd. there are already hedges against inflation and currency devaluation. bitcoin isn't needed, it's value fluctuates far more than the major currencies.

ps. you've yet to name one practical real world use of bitcoin apart from drugs and avoiding capital controls..
