If my parents have paid their mortgage then what's stopping

There are a lot of things that can go sideways.

Property taxes, insurance, repairs, health costs, inflation, these are artful risks in an early retirement scenario.

Working may help, but generally part time work pays poorly.

That house you're living in is their retirement fund. They're counting on selling it to fund a decade of exorbitant cruises, world travel, and otherwise frivolous behavior planned just well enough that they go broke before dying.

Do not believe in inheriting anything. The closest thing you could do would be to make enough money to buy the house directly from them at a reasonable rate with with a mortgage with no interest. They're your parents, but you're still gonna need to butter them up for a couple years before that so they're willing to do it.

How much is the house worth? Do you need a house that big? You could sell it and buy a smaller/cheaper house and pocket the difference. If you invest that money, it might cover the taxes and upkeep expenses on your new place.

Rent it out to people (post ads for living space) pretty much like a hotel or an apartment, balance out your expenses. Make sure they have a will written too, I'm pretty sure that's required. Shit i wish i had that opportunity.
