I'm actually good at what I do so 'the bosses' acknowledge that and I ignore the less competent boffins who choose to brown-nose. I often share private jokes with 'the bosses' about the brown-nosers.

There's a disconnect between the staff. We usually don't work directly with the bosses for most of the day.

this op, if you're better than them then you don't have to worry. if your bosses are good then they will appreciate it when you challenge their ideas as well.

brown nosing is not an effective strategy in my experience.
