i have an interactive brokers account, paid for some data (ACRA, some generic others). you have this thing called BookTrader that shows you how many orders are placed (1 = 100 shares) and at what prices they are at

the overall bid/ask size is at the top

basically think of bid/ask as a tug-of-war match - whoever has the biggest amount of bodies SHOULD have the most weight. but when there's more people Selling, that should mean the price will go down. of course, if their prices are far away from the current price, that doesn't matter much. opposite with buying

but if the bid-ask spread is close, especially near the current price, more trading should take place
