Patent law is booming

Asking about a legal field now to gauge your employment prospects is liking looking at today's weather forecast to plan for next month's trip.

By the time you graduate law school, the market will have changed. By the time you get onto partnership track, the market will have changed 3 times. By time you're actually up for partner, the market will have changed 7 times.

Focusing on a legal specialty based on current conditions is just stupid.

>Patent law is booming

Isn't there a flood of noob patent lawyers with no experience out in the market right now?

And it's not getting better since all the law students are still piling into patent law...

Methinks that train has already left the station.

I studied law. But currently don't work in the field because /biz/. Just like economics law is a very broad and you can work anywhere with a degree in it.

All fields of law involving money and businesses are always wanted. Corporate law. Tax law.
Niche specialisations are also wanted, but pay less. Administrative law, environmental law.
Popular fields of law from tv are oversaturated, so they require you to be better than your peers. Criminal law. Family law.
The 'know it all' fields of law are a one way ticket to unemployment. Constitutional law. International law. Philosophy of law.

One specialisation might sound more interesting than the other, but in the end it's all the same shit. You get a case, you try to discern the facts from the gibberish people present you, you inform your client what his chances are, you look up the relevant case law and regulations, and then you present your solution in a tactical way. You're basically just solving puzzles and try to outwit the other party. It's pretty fun.

The market is okay, and the money is still good, but business law is bone-crushingly depressing.

I have a brother that does business law. Fire away with any questions.

If you're not gonns be the #1 top dog there's really no point in doing it at all. Law is so easily rewrited, changed and edited it's hard to even tell if a basis foundation is even worth learning. You might spend years studying a law that might end up changing by time you graduate.

On the other hand, there's an extreme boom in business lately and the demand is great right now. If u just be a paralegal and work with meme business for awhile you got a good chance of expanding your network.

But What the fuck do i know.
You should ask someone whos been doing it for years.

That's not how law school works. You don't learn the "laws" in law school -- rather, you learn how to think, talk, write, and act like a lawyer. How to spot issues, how to make convincing arguments, how to write clear contracts, how to present a case to a court or jury.

Yes, the laws do change somewhat, at least in some areas. But most of the time the controlling law may be decades or even centuries old. Some legal concepts used every single day in the U.S. were created hundreds of years ago in old England.

That's actually a terrible analogy

Makes sense. So how do you know which sector of law to go in. I was interested in environmental law for a bit but then i got unsure of the demand for those. Not sure if the tuition wage ratio off.

>So how do you know which sector of law to go in.
Hard question to answer because every lawyer follows a different path. Some follow a steadfast interest in a particular practice area; others switch around based on the job openings. Some are more focus on getting into the best firm possible, regardless of the type of work they do; others only want to do certain work, regardless of where they do it.

Without having a full discussion about your grades, your test scores, your work ethic, your desired location, your willingness to relocate, your interests, your talents, and your finances, its not possible to give you meaningful advice. Especially since things will change, unpredictably, by the time the advice become relevant.

My wife is a business transactional attorney.

All areas of law outside patent law are oversaturated with applicants; she's fighting with hundreds of applicants for entry-level jobs, and associate/entry-level positions within companies are either being filled by diversity unicorns, or people with >3 years of experience.

If you have a good network and want to start your own firm, you can ignore me. If you are a diversity unicorn (minority, LGBT or harrowing immigration story is a bonus), you will be ok as long as you don't fail out. If you're an average 20-something white male or female who isn't obviously gay and just wants to get out & work for an interesting company, either you will need to be magna cum laude, or you'll need to be prepared to be severely underpaid for 3-5 years after graduation.

Good luck.
