Litecoin was a clone of Bitcoin with a different cryptohash function if I recall right. Ethereum is a step forward from bitcoin - instead of just storing data on the blockchain, you can create and execute programs that run on all Ethereum nodes. Imagine an online casino that never goes down and always pays you back your winnings, not because the owner is nice an doesnt want to screw you, but because the contract on the ethereum virtual machine enforces it.
