I'm a year and a half away from graduating as an accountant but I don't think I'll make it. I'm struggling with the material (because I'm a lazy procrastinator who is disinterested in the subject matter of accounting). I'm thinking about dropping out even though I know that if I pushed myself, I could graduate and become a CPA.

Would I be making a mistake if I drop out and pursue things that I'm actually interested in? In other words, I want you to give me a list of reasons why accounting is a bad field to get into. What are the future prospects of the career? Is AI going to cut a considerable amount of accounting jobs in the near future?

I understand this is more of a /adv/ post than a /biz/ one but I really want people who have a thorough knowledge of what accounting to give me pointers.
>>
Its boring as fuck
Go fiscalist
>>
I'm in the same position as OP. On probation already. Probably gonna kicked out of my program this semester.

Fuck accounting. It's the most boring and tiring shit ever. You have to be majorly autistic to even tolerate this shit.
>>
>>1106642
>should I pursue something I'm interested in
Like what? Activities that cannot and will not bring you enought money to be self-sustaining (not counting charity) is, at best, a hobby.
>why is accounting a bad field to go into?
Accounting is a man made science, its not like natural science that it intuitively makes sense. It doesnt make sense some of the time. Some of the rates are put arbitrarily and change as political parties get votes for lower/higher taxes etc.
The documentary that made me stay in Accounting was this: "Tax Free Tour".
I believe the jews on this board purpusefully say accounting is boring so they keep the money for themselves. Anyone in accounting who went far enough, knows how big a deal accounting can get.
>will AI replace accountants?
Bookkeppers yes, not CPAs, investigators, tax lawyers, specialists, etc because, like law, some of the high tier accounting is very judgement based.
the big 4 basically control the world
>>
>>1106669
The Sarbanes-Oxley Act pretty much cemented the fact that accountants will rule the world. Feels great
>>
>>1106642
I was thinking about becoming an accountant but everyone hates it. Any accountants out there who enjoy it?
>>
>>1106710
Accountant at one of the Big 4 companies here. The most intriguing part of my year is the 4 times I get to completely analyze the data at the end of each cycle. Other than that, it isn't that glamorous. It gets me the paychecks, and they are very appealing. Hey I do less work than a McDonald employee and get paid much more. I can't complain.
>>
>>1106642
You need a master's degree to become a CPA. The material isn't hard, but you need to get the fundamentals down.

>>
>a year and a half away
Suck it up and finish. Then do whatever the fuck you want.
>>
>>1106669
>Anyone in accounting who went far enough, knows how big a deal accounting can get.

I have many family friends that stuck in their accounting fields and they are all very rich. Easily 10's of millions rich, and even the smaller firm partners are in the millions for sure

It's basically a way to get your foot in the door to collecting fat dividends as you become a partner in the firm
>>
>>1106642
Also, can't you just transfer to a degree that you would actually enjoy while making money?

Make a list of all things that aren't going to be a waste of money (can you get a job with it that pays good)

Then, make a list of all the things that you could see yourself doing for at least 20 years

Then, the ones that line up you do.

E.g. I would like to work in medicine, however, I also enjoyed engineering and modern history in high school

being a historian is not profitable at all so I studied medical engineering

>fiscalist
what even is that? is that an "analyst" ?
i cant find anything that isnt in german(i think)
>>1106900
do you really work 50+ hours a week and eating dinner at the office, or is that just a meme?

also can you live comfortable without full CPA?

>>1107003
in the accounting world is moving up the ladder a garauntee if you know what your doing? or is like engineering where there are some who dont ever really go beyond where they start at(those people who dont think ahead and only do the job never more)
>>
>>1107003
> Easily 10's of millions rich

complete bullshit. US big 4 partners in large cities are only making $400k/yr to start less their partnership stake payout. let's say it's an even $500-600k/yr, that's not even close to "tens of millions rich."
>>
>>1107292
It is if you put it all into Eth
>>
>>1107003
Absurd
>>
>>1106900
CPA owner of small firm here. I like dealing with clients and they payments are great. Tax season sucks though.
>>
>>1107412
what country (and state if you're in the US) do you work in and on average how much do you pay yourself per year, gross? how much and what kind of experience did you have before starting your own firm and what type of services do you offer?
>>
>>1107412
what your opinion these questions anon>>1107011
>>
>>1107292
I think he's saying 10s of millions in net worth.

Yeah starting as a partner it's around 400K but you'll end your career at around a million. Plus at retirement you have your shares bought by the company and if your firm has grown significantly then that could be in the 10s of millions

I remember when I used to be a young and impressionable accounting undergrad.

Am I the only one who thinks it's sad to read shit like
>get this boring education, work for 50 years doing this job you hate and then at the end of it you'll earn a million a year. Life well spent

seems really depressing tbhfam
>inb4 where do you think you are
>>
>>1107820
It would be great to do the things you like and get paid well for it too. But that isn't always possible and then you have to make a choice between doing what you like with less pay/job security and doing something you don't like but with more financial stability. I'd choose the latter as the better pay makes up for it on the short term. On the long term it probably would break me up, but by then I probably could switch to a career that suits me better.
People who've grown up in poverty often will do everything to escape from it.
>>
>>1106642

Depends on how close you are.

When a person is 75% of their way to having a degree I just say to finish.

If you are less than 50% and not interested in the subject at all then make the switch. Try to switch to something where your previous experience is at least somewhat applicable so it wasnt all a waste.
>>
>>1106666

agreed.

no, people who experienced famine or violence do.

>>
>>1106917

No you don't you just need a certain amount of college credit to sit for the exam, often times it leads to a masters but not always.
>>
>>1106642
If you want real help, go on Reddit. I'm serious. You'll get better responses.

In my opinion? Do what you love. You won't enjoy your life if you don't do what you love.
Then again, most anons love this site and want to kill themselves every day.
Whatever. My point still applies.

>le "do what you love" meme

If everyone followed this advice, we'd all be impoverished and unemployable liberal arts grads instead of engineers, doctors, accountants, lawyers, scientists, or anything in a hard, technical field
>>
>>1106642

You'll be miserable for the rest of your life, you'll work one of the most soulcrushingly boring and dry jobs known to man (whether you work in audit or tax, industry or public, government or private, doesn't matter), you'll have one of the the shittiest work-life balances out of any careers out there, you'll only start making "real" money much later in your career and even then you won't have the time to enjoy it... but at least you'll always have a job waiting for you no matter how badly Wall Street and Washington fuck up the economy.
>>
>>1108205
Is this the work-life balance really that atrocious? I've heard horror stories of investment banker's hours. 14-hour minimum days, etc.
>>
>>1108680

expect to slave off for any careers that pays well in senior levels.
>>
>>1106642

Shit OP, are you me ?!

Your post feels like it was literally written by me.
To answer your question, I dropped out a year ago and I don't regret it at all. You only live once, afterwards you won't exist EVER AGAIN FOR ETERNITY. Fuck accounting.
