They really are pushing this stuff on moocs like Coursera.

I'm in bioinformatics and recently quite a few bioinformaticians have been choosing to reinvent themselves as data scientists to get higher pay, all due to a highly overlapping skill set in some areas.

The trend is starting to have a knock-on effect of increasing bioinformatics salaries due to a falling supply of bioinformaticians too, so we might reach an equilibrium.

Personally I intend to stay in my field since I enjoy it and have a start-up to nurse.

I'd avoid it as a field if I were you. It has a very limited market, despite the shilling. The money in Data science was 5 years ago, not now.
