Not sure if this is the right board to post on but here we go:
I believe I may be getting scammed and need some advice from the you guys.
I applied for a job for a third shift cleaning position at a factory where they make boats for the government, this would be a great fit for me because I'm in school and really need something that will work with my schedule .
The cleaning company is contracted out to a private firm so I would not be working directly for the state, I just got a call from the contracted cleaning company for an interview, and they said I would need to bring a bunch of things, they want to see my birth cert., drivers licence, need my SSN, but most concerning is they want me to pay 20$ for a criminal state background check.
Does that sound like some sort of scam to you guys?
I looked up the address they gave me on google maps and found the shop, it looks pretty normal, and it is a cleaning/janitorial service on the sign outside, and I used wayback machine and their website has been around for 12 years, but idk if I should trust them, also they called me for an interview today and I just filled out the application yesterday.
I wouldn't mind paying if I knew I had the job as long as I passed, but Im pretty poor
It's definitely a thing some places do.
But if the place you're working at has you paying your own background check they're probably going to nickel and dime you on uniforms and supplies too. I wouldn't put it past it for them to pay you in prepaid cards that charge interest. (My hs dropout buddy does jobs that shit on him like this).
So yeah, probably legit since you've seen their physical location, but basically modern day indentured servitude. I would highly advise against it.
Keep looking senpai. Try to look into security guard work if you must do graveyard shifts. Less likely to be treated and played like an illegal or a slave.
