i was a really skilled death knight player back in wrath and i would always be top of the dps charts thanks too my death bringer's will but at the end of the day i had to pug everything because i was underage and didn't know how to form relationships with people also didn't help that there was a million dks and ret pallys rolling on the same gear

I kind of have mixed feelings about it. I've seen it work that way, but then when I look at my own experience it didn't work out that way. I got my job despite the fact that I didn't know anyone at the company I currently work at. I've been promoted within my first 6 months working and received a $10k raise already. I think ultimately your merit is more important than who you know. Because of my work ethic I've developed connections that will be useful in the future when I can finally apply the "who you know" thing, but those people wouldn't back me up if I was a total shithead.

It's true though. Here's my story.

Situation:
>Be me, employed within same company for three years
>No movement at all, but become skilled and versatile in my position
>Head-to-head with a coworker for a management position. He's higher seniority by two years
>Upper management hints that we are two of four prospects for the position outside of a new hire

My upper hand (who you know):

>Friend also serves a certain regular and his friends
>The regular is the VP of operations at my company and his friends are some of the upper management

Check out networking groups. But be weary, there's a lot of pyramid schemers at some. Other, more close knit groups can provide contacts and even friends for life.
