Now that 2015 is over, what were your stock results for the year?

Remember that if you made a profit, you beat the market.

If you believe this you're a fucking retard.

You mean how the S&P500 lost out this year? That's not counting the dividend payments anon. If you held 100 shares of S&P500 from the start of 2015 to the end, you made money.

>>
>>1021071
made +1500€ on btc, bought 7.5btc at 200€, sell it at 400€ right now.

Everyone is talking about 650€ this year, I believe it, but he will go down before that happen.
>>
I am currently up ~7% almost same as the NASDAQ 100. Not bad after being down 20% due to oil trading :^)

>>1021568
So that you have experience with investing when you are retiring upon large life changing amounts of money? What kind of retarded question is that.

Balance change looks better than graph, I usually just wait till my tax documents are finalized before I really go over everything with a fine tooth comb though.

Any year I beat the S&P I'm fine with my performance.
>>
>>1021071
>Remember that if you made a profit, you beat the market.
No, you didn't beat the market, you just went with it. If you do what the market does, you get paid. If you fight the market you must pay it.
>>
>>1021568
It's all relative.
Most people here are playing with 5k or less that means 300 is around a 6% profit, which isn't too bad. Too put things in perspective, even the oracle of omaha usually only gets 5-10% ROI
>>
>>1021071

Not bad. I had some duds like IEV (Europe ETF), and had a $2k loss in oil before my stop loss was hit. I did well in a mutual fund and most of my money was made trading options. I want to do even better next year. I'm aiming for $2k+ per month in 2016 in options trading revenue. I already sold everything for tax loss harvesting and am thinking I'm going to stay in cash for a while until I find something I want to invest in. Most of the global markets (latin, europe, australia) have hit walls this year. There may be good buying opportunities in these markets this year.
>>
>>1021751
I think we trade sideways for this year again.
>>
>>1021071
Invested in november around 2060, so flat but I'm ready for the bull in the decade to come. In a week I'll have 10k. Waiting for payday.
>inb4 invested at the top.
Wait for new all time high this year and cry permabears.
>>
>>1021559
Yeah mostly
>>1021568
Well then you'd be really butthurt if you were me. That $300.00 is what I started with, I'm only up $10 after a week. Im not trying to make a living here, this is purely for educational purposes until I figure out wtf I'm doing.
>>
>>1021760
When you buy a S&P 500 ETF, do you have access to the dividends? When do they drop ? Thank you.

I'm up about 8.5% which is nice. Hella volatile though.
>>
>>1021764
It depends if you're buying the composite (IE the actual SPY), an ETF that owns the composite or something that just tracks the ETF.

Unfortunately it's in french but it seems they have dividends. Should I wait a year or it's in january ?
>>
>>1021779
Ctrl f the document for "ex dividend date" or whatever it is called in your language. That is when you are entitled to the next quarterly dividend. Buying based on this isn't necessarily a good strategy though.
>>
>>1021782
I didn't buy it for that reason. Just thought about it as it's year end.
>>
>>1021784
It's probably too late so don't worry about it. Most companies have their ex dividend dates by the end of december
>>
Pretty much only started investing my savings at the start of the year. Learning to do it all myself and enjoying doing it so far. I started out just going with a cash ISA at about 1%. Then I invested in a stocks and shares ISA shortly after the August correction. That was sheer luck. I had no idea that had even happened before I started looking. That got me a 2.5% increase on that part of my savings.

In the stocks and shares ISA I'm just using funds for now while I learn more and add more capital to build up a solid safe base before going on more risky ventures but I'm using 3 different funds for now for wide diversification. One is a multi asset class, multi manager active fund that invests in stuff all over Europe and some US stuff. One is a passive index fund that tracks the S&P 500 and the other is an Asia and pacific region fund. I kind of look at it that for about 21 hours out of a 24 hour business day my money is being worked through various different markets.

This year I'm going to get moving on finding a decent bond fund. Probably government bonds and some investment grade corporate bonds. I was some pretty sure fire dividend based returns no matter what the equity markets do next year. Something that I can just keep adding capital to and slowly grow over time.

I intend to try and double or even triple what I did this year and just keep on going year after year
>>
I'm not an active investor and I made about 4.75% on my investments this year. :^)
>>
>>1022042
so pretty much the same rate as putting your savings in an ISA which is tax and risk free. Nice job dumb ass.
>>
>>1023220

People who tracked the S&P 500 in 2015 went negative this year. Hard to justify anything when in that sort of environment.
>>
>>1021071
Not bad. Teach me your ways.

how the fuck do I gauge performance of a stock portfolio with periodic contributions?
>>
>>1023531

Ah well that is always good. Gotta love those sweet dividends. mmm

No. No it doesn't. :D

>>1023630
>>how the fuck do I gauge performance of a stock portfolio with periodic contributions?
ROI, the only performance metric that actually matters
>>
>>1023630
Start monitoring what you're doing with your money.
>>
>>1023702
>ROI
well
if i take my total account balance (1 year) and divide it by my total contributions (1 year) I end up with 1.005
so my ROI is 0.5%?
this is 100% in US stock index with an expense ratio of like .05%

t-thanks bogle sama

Some of you guys are really cool, so I want to tell you to not be in Saudi Arabia this year, if things go down, 2016 is all about Linn Energy LINN and how its going up 1500% when oil shoots back to 70 a barrel.
>>
>>1023702
>>1023575

>>1023575

Pretty sure it does. The S&P index tracker fund I'm using is currently marked with an ex-dividend date
>>
>>1023740

the S&P is a weighted index of the top 500 stocks, it doesn't include dividends - it is based on the sum of the current market value of each stock multiplied by the number of shares that total is then divided by a divisor to create an index

you're refering
>>
>>1023748

you're referring to a tracker fund that tries to invest in companies making up the S&P in order to track the index... yes you will also benefit from dividends by investing in a tracker
>>
7% on the year. Not great.

That's after paying out $10,000 in commissions and margin interest.
>>
>>1023748
>>1023752
Yeah I see what you're saying. I just presume that's what these other guys are referring to as well.
>>
>>1023726
Happy to help. Just remember that if your periodic contributions are irregular, then you need to use ROI's big brother IRR.

>>1023762
Correct. An index is not a index fund, even though people sometimes get lazy with how they use the terms. An "index" is a formulaic benchmark derived from a mathematical calculation; an "index fund" is an actual compilation of investments that tracks the underlying index.
