Higher education is free in my country, and my family absolutely wants me to get at least a bachelor's degree.
The issue is that I want to join the army and I don't give a shit about most academic subjects. Therefore I suppose I should study something with actual practical use, but I don't know what.

Right now my two options are either to double major in two foreign languages, or do CS.

Could I get some advice? I don't know what to do.
>>
>>1015459
Go to a military academy so you can have both?
>>
>>1015466
I don't think there are worthwhile military academies here, most of them seem to be specialized for pilots.

I'm not even sure if I'd like to commission, I'll probably enlist even if I get a degree.
>>
>>1015467
I can't believe that. Contact the army and ask them what they can offer. Usually they have engineering positions of many kinds. Maybe even in CS. Usually great opportunities as long as you don't have to go to war.
>>
>>1015526
>engineering positions
If I enlist, I'm going in as infantry or something along those lines, possibly SF candidate (that would be 18X in the US). I don't feel like doing a desk job, I'm just looking to get an education that could at least be marginally useful (hence why languages seemed like a good option).

I haven't had the opportunity to visit a recruiting center yet, so I'll do that as well.
>>
>>1015652
>If I join the army, I want to be the lowest cuck on the ladder instead of a specialized one.

Anon, would you rather clean toilets or help design bridges. I mean, at least be a wrench turner.

I come from a military family and I would never wish it on anyone. The military is broken into three groups. Officers, specialized, and lowest common denominator of society.
>>
>>1015663
Enlisted special forces probably isn't best described as the "lowest common denominator of society".
I'd like to see deployment at one point, not be a mechanic or air traffic controller and never actually go anywhere.
>>
>>1015459
If you plan on rising to the ranks, you can join business with the leadership skills you learn. There's a book I'm reading called "Start-Up Nation." It's basically a propaganda book for Israel, but it's a good model of understanding the economics of one of the smallest countries of the world, yet they have the most bustling tech and venture capital markets. Mandatory conscription leads to great business leaders, maybe join the military, get an MBA afterwords and start a business?
>>
>>1015459
>Higher education is free in my country
Government revenue funded but yes sometimes it's easier to just say 'free' and not use that brain of yours to solve the riddle
>>
>>1015459

Scotland?
>>
>>1015681
That's irrelevant, I pointed out that it was free in order to make it clear that I wouldn't be spending a lot of money like Americans do to earn a degree.
>>1015684
Nope
>>1015671
I'm not sure yet about what I want to do when I leave the military, since I haven't even enlisted yet. But thanks.
>>
>>1015669
>I'd like to see deployment at one point,

Oh, so you're the third category. Make sure you make a bunch of stupid remarks when you enlist like how you're "government property" and to point out to everyone you're a hero despite never doing anything.

Brotip: The mechanics and air traffic controllers get deployed to combat zones, they just have a lower chance of being killed by Ahmed and his vest because they have some meat shields between them.
>>
>>1015697
Why are you so bitter?

Mechanics and ATCs were just an example, I'm not talking about them in particular.
>>
My friend loved the navy when he was there. Got to travel the world for 2 years and learn a lot.
Just make sure if you join, don't be stuck as a private, learn something useful from it. The army always wants competent people wherever you are.
The real question is, are you competent?
>>
>>1015701
Because I grew up on a military base having to be near human garbage the first 18 years of my life.
>>
>>1015706
>competent
What do you call competent? I can already speak three languages, which I suppose is a good thing. Apart from that, I don't have any valuable skills I'm aware of.

>>1015708
That's too bad, no need to be a stuck up asshole about it though
>>
>>1015714
>That's too bad, no need to be a stuck up asshole about it though

Bro, this is 4chan.

Let's face it you're not going to be some special forces elite killing machine like Rambo. You're probably not going to even make the first cut.

This isn't a bad thing though, why would you want to be human fodder?

Infantry is shit tier. You're everyone's bitch. You'll be moving heavy boxes around, doing patrol, and cleaning latrines.

Becoming an officer is a whole thing on it's own.

So you might as well specialize in something so when you leave after your first tour with PTSD, you're qualified to do more than work as a security guard at a mall.
>>
>could be an officer with an interesting job. >instead going to be a grunt digging latrines.

good plan, OP.
>>
>>1015733
Why would I not be able to make the cut for SF? As long as I'm preparing and doing so in a serious, not half-assed manner, I'd say I have the same chances as anyone else (that is to say, a very slim chance, but it's within the realm of possibility)
>a whole thing on it's own
How so? I didn't really look into commissioning
>>1015776
>officer with an interesting job
I was under the impression that officers did a lot of paperwork and very little actual "field" work, and that the more you moved up in rank, the more that was true.
>>
Ah to be young again...
>>
>wanting to be the lowest garbage-tier cuck
Do you really enjoy company of vulgar, retarded apes OP? Because those will be your buddies for life.
>>
>>1015697
>>1015708
>>1015733
You sound like ya got cucked by some 18x my man
Also if people want to go around rootin tootin shootin all that shit that's their choice. Don't fucking tell them not to chase their dreams man.
Infantry is pretty shit yah, but so is wagecuck.

DESU senpai, you are too stupid for a higher education, and as it seems too stupid to be a military officer. A digshit grunt will fit you the best. Good luck, die fast, do not reproduce.

>>1016707
Did you get molested by an 11B, anon? Or are you just fucking stupid?
>>
>>1015459
as a guy who recently got out of military my story: So i joined when I was 18 didnt finish my education
Went straight for Special Forces
Got through and stayed there for a year until I got sick, it was too booring because i was in charge of equipment
Basicly beg them to sign the contract and make me civil again.
A month later join the French Legion
Spend half a year there.
It even worse. I dont understand what theyre saying..
They treat all the recruits like brainless punching bags..
Deserted when I got my first chance.
Trust me its a good experience for the first years your learning.
My advice. Join the reserve and study. Military wont give you much in terms of your future outside military. Military is for life much like monks in churches
>>
Study engineering.
>>
>>1015685
>That's irrelevant, I pointed out that it was free in order to make it clear that I wouldn't be spending a lot of money like Americans do to EARN a degree.
Unless you plan on emigrating from your welfare-state homeland, you're very likely to pay for your education - and it won't be cheap.
>>
>>1015714
>What do you call competent? I can already speak three languages, which I suppose is a good thing. Apart from that, I don't have any valuable skills I'm aware of.
Du är Finlandssvensk, eller hur? Skit i militären. Karriär inom FM är för hudfärgshandikappade och/eller personer med personlighetsstörningar som gör dem oattraktiva på den civila arbetsmarknaden.
>>
>>1015882
>I was under the impression that officers did a lot of paperwork and very little actual "field" work, and that the more you moved up in rank, the more that was true.
Paperwork is very interesting in comparison to being blown in half by allah-snackbar shrapnel and bullets.

Hint: Join the French Foreign Legion if you want to see "action".
>>
>>1015459
Two foreign languages is actually a great idea, especially if you want a military job.
>>
>>1016791
Is it a good plan to get a degree in a foreign language? Which one should I study?
What kind of jobs and opportunities can it give me?
>>
>>1015459
do computer science but try very very hard to network with others in your major. start a company with or without them. you will become fantastically rich if you create a useful thing that solves a pain point. I believe in you and know you can do this.
>>
>I'm going in as infantry or something along those lines
>I'd like to see deployment at one point
you are just a burnout.
Protip, war isn't about heroics anymore sense the invention of useful long range firearms. It's completely random whether you live or get sniped or blown up from a IUD or airplane fire. It's not like knights with axes fighting 1vs1 or some shit anymore.
.
anyways, what country you in? How long is service? Do you want to enlist because you know you'd be bad at college? because that is actually a decent reason
>>
>>1018106
>Do you want to enlist because you know you'd be bad at college? because that is actually a decent reason
Skilled tradesmen earn more money than officers, especially in nordic countries (which is where OP is from, judging by his rhetoric).

A military career is not the only alternative to college.
>>
>>1018118
well I was hinting at maybe he fears he would end up a neet without a drill Sargent yelling at him every day. It's great training to become a man
>>
>>1015681
Dude sounds really butt hurt from him piling student loans hahahaha

>hey mcdonalds is giving free ice cream cones today!
>fuck you its not free it is expenses credited to their balance sheet and account for only for cost price and likely write off as marketing expense of the organization

Who the fuck cares dude. Free for him that's all he cares. You stupid little maggot piece of shit.
>>
>>1016774
Another butt hurt student loan cuck
>>
What's the best way to get a successful and interesting career in the army?
>>
>>1015663
This is spot on!

>>1016707
>- Oberleutnant Austrian Bundesheer
srsly?
>>
>>1015459
If you want to join the army then join. You will regret it for most of your life if you dont. Anyway its just few years, if you like then its great, if not leave when time comes and do something else.
>>
Does your school have something like an ROTC program? You could also just straight up call a recruiter and talk about coordinating training and education at the same or something like that, I hear they will front you the money for it too. It's probably less likely if your education is already free though.
>>
>>1015459

Do CS faggot. As long as you're not retarded, you'll have good job security and you'll make a decent wage assuming you position yourself well and don't negotiate like a pussy.

Hell, you could even do CS for the military.
>>
>>1020137
>CS for the military
Like what, SIGINT?
>>
>>1020477
netsec , netsec in army gets you government security clearance , then do officer training then you can transition into intelligence agency work fbi, cia, asis, asio, mi5. here anyway. though i did get deployed as a rifleman because i wanted to kill people and achieved that goal. and then after i went into intelligence work i got so many perks. i can detain people for no reason for up to day, allowed to use weapons , can authorize civilians to use weapons, can legally break and enter private property. etc.
>>
>>1015652
>haven´t had the opportunity to visit a recruiting center yet

That´s probably the very first thing you should do. You can probably just send them an email or call them, if going there is complicated.

Who will tell you what they can offer/use other than they themselves?
>>
>>1019568
I'm actually from a nordic welfare state myself, and since I possess analytical skills superior to that of a child´s, I can deduce that "free" education isn't free at all.
>>
>>1020484
>and then after i went into intelligence work i got so many perks. i can detain people for no reason for up to day, allowed to use weapons , can authorize civilians to use weapons, can legally break and enter private property. etc.
I hope you die a gruesome death at the hands of a gangbanger, kidnapper, drug smuggler or whatever leeches you parasites spend your time chasing.

You federally employed welfare-cucks are what ruined America.
>>
>>1015652
There is nothing marginally useful about an sf soldier beyond the fight you stupid shit.

Go be a com at engineer then you might nabe someyhing whe they inevitably get rid of your ass for bein worn out
>>
>>1020507
so edgy kid
>>
>>1020484
Do armies other than US/UK/China do substantial netsec and cyberwar stuff though?
Does that mean I'd have to get at least a master's in CS?
How do you have all these rights if you're basically a infosec specialist/sysadmin working for the government? I thought only paramilitary "elites" like the CIA's SAD could do that shit, not the conventional employees and much less IT guys
>>
>>1020533
i used the security clearance, my previous deployment as a rifleman and my qualifications to get my application noticed, then i moved around. once you have applied and failed they wont let you try again for a few years, i didnt want to delay my move, you may not need everything i did. careers arent linear. you dont need a masters just get the security clearance from the army ( you need a reason to get it, netsec is one ) and do the relevant training and certifications the army provides while you work netsec in the army for a few years. then you can transition to whatever branch of the intelligence agency you want. i had to do 3 months seperate training at one of their facilties and then had a 9 month provisional period. roles arent strictly defined, i can get put on field work or IT work. this all depends on your country. you should sort out your career path based on what your country offers to get the best out of everything. the army paid for my CS degree etc.
>>
>>1020545
How did they train you? Did you just go through standard Security+, CEH or whatever training?
Was it in the army or AF? I thought only the air force dealt with cyber security
>this all depends on your country
I'm European so I don't know if I have the same opportunities as a US citizen
I'd like to do it in the US if possible, but is it possible to move to the US if I get my CS degree?

Either way, is it useless to get a language degree if I already speak English + my native language? Could it give me many more opportunities?
>>
>>1015459
You need to either move to the US or kill yourself.

You faggots don't even get the RobinHood app.
>>
>>1020622
>move to US
How? I would but I don't know how
I have low standards so a shitty job (within the realm of decency and legality) isn't a problem
>>
>>1020545
Also, you're saying you got deployed, did that have a big influence on the hiring process or was it just your experience as a soldier sufficient? Were you an infantryman/11B?
>>
>>1020623
Come over as an exchange student. If you are the smallest bit brown, you will get a free ride and all the white sluts to fuck at the University you go to.
>>
>>1020648
But I'm not brown at all and education in the US is extremely expensive, I can't afford it.
Is there no way to move to a relatively small state if I have a CS degree for example?
>>
>>1020660
You need an H1B visa. Talk to an immigration lawyer.
