How bad was Weimar Republic Germany? Was it like America, now, or worse?
>>

depends on what time period it was. there was the golden years, the great depression and hyperinflation. which one do you want to know about? or would you like to know about the overall time of it? downfall included?

Honestly, I don't know much about the Weimar Republic, except that was the apparent state of Germany after World War I, up to the rise of the Nazis. A lot of people give it credit for being one of the most degenerate state of Germany, especially around Berlin and the big cities. Decadence is often cited.

>degenerate state of Germany, especially around Berlin and the big cities. Decadence is often cited.
well, i don't think it was "degenerate" but a nazi would probably see it as that. Prostitution was legal, most people didn't care if you were gay or not. prostitution houses were full most nights. abstract art was also very popular. unique architecture was encouraged.

of course, all these things were seen as degenerate to Hitler as the nazis

Bad enough for them to choose Hitler instead.

>Bad enough for them to choose Hitler instead
that was when the wall street crash happened. Germany was still recovering from the invasion of the Ruhr and hyperinflation. so they borrowed lots of money from America. so when the wall street crash happened Germany was probably the worst affected as they had to give back all of America money right away.

keep in mind extreme parties only do good in times of crisis. and this was a time of crisis.

Informative replies, thank you. I suspect many people, who otherwise did not have particular problems with Jews, Slavs, or others, in fact supported Hitler based on how glamorous many of his ideas seemed, whether this support was during or after the election, at some point. The early supporters of Hitler, on the other hand, were mostly fierce anti-Semites, although many later supporters were as well. Categorizing the Jews as traitors for World War I's failure (for the Central Powers), and perceived economic disturbances, was effective propaganda.
>>
>>2177559
that is exactly it. some jews even voted for Hitler his policies at the time were so appealing. and the propaganda by joseph goebbels was probably the best ever.

if you ask me it all comes down to the treaty of Versailles crippling Germany so much.

It was poor and utterly degenerate.
People had no work, they scraped for a living and people were forced to prostitute themselves to survive. Due to this Germany became the sex capital of Europe with people from all over the world coming to fuck cheap whores and child prostitutes.
Clubs and bars would compete to be the most perverted, homosexuallity was common and so were drag shows and primitive transgenderism. Drugs were openly sold and used and drug addiction from cocaine, heroin and tranquilizers became rampant.
The Nazi party was largely a backlash against this from the ordinary Germans who were disgusted by it.

Hitler never won much more than 1 third of the German vote. He wasn't very popular at all, until he gained power. Then he broke the Versailles treaty (which fucked over Germany) and created jobs with massive public building projects. The fact that Germans now had jobs and weren't cucked by Versailles was way more important than the Jews for the majority of Germans. Not having to pay a trillion dollars for a loaf of bread is great. No matter who made it that way
>>
>>2177700
well due to PR this made it difficult for any party to get a majority. most governments were formed by coalitions. Even when the Nazis got 288 seats they made to form a coalition to get into power. Hitler also got 11 million votes in the president election in 1932
>>
>>2177732
Agreed. But this doesn't take away from the fact that the vast majority of Germans voted against Hitler. They preferred other candidates. Hitler wasn't even supposed to become chancellor. It was a result of Hindenburg carking it. Kind of like how the Republicans endorsed Trump. Knowing in their minds that he would never actually win and gain real power.

>Hitler wasn't even supposed to become chancellor.
What do you mean? if anything Hitler was supposed to become one. The Nazis got 196 seats in 1932 but Franz von Papen was appointed chancellor instead due to the fact Hindenburg hated Hitler. i think that is how it goes?

In the early 20's it was shit due to hyperinflation as the Germans kept printing money without making any profit, as the French had invaded industrial areas for reparations that Germany was too poor to pay. Politics became unstable, and Hitler tried to have a coup that didn't work. Then Weimar replaced the currency to solve hyperinflation and started producing goods to get the French to take them and fuck off as well as taking US loans. Then things got better for a bit and Germany even joined the League of Nations (shitty predecessor to the UN that they weren't allowed to join initially). Then the wall street crash happened and as a result of Germany being dependent on loans, everything became shit again. Then politics also became shit and Hitler used that to make a comeback, used his gaining popularity to become chancellor, slowly persuaded President Hindenburg to give him power, and when Hindenburg died, made a law merging the office of Chancellor and President that was backdated a day to make it look legit, thus creating the office of fuhrer.

The Reichstagsbrand and the SA/SS violence and intimidation against social democrat and centrist parliament members also helped, though.

The majority against Hitler wasn't so vast (NSDAP got 43% in the last true elections in March 1933), but it's true that he never achieved the absolute majority on his own before the one-party state. However, the NSDAP coalition with the DNVP (and not Hindenburg's death) made him become chancellor legally.
DNVP believed they could control Hitler thanks to their key 8% support and the fact that elder Hindenburg was still the president. Von Papen, who was pretty much Hindenburg's protégé, convinced the old and ill man that they could use Hitler's power over the media and the social masses to keep Germany under the nobility's control.
However, by the time of Hindenburg's death in August 1934, the NSDAP had made enough changes to the Weimar constitution (it's loopholes allowed that 4/9 -less than 50%- of the parliament was enough to change the constitution) so that Hitler was allowed to become president even though he was chancellor already. That's how he fused both roles and became Führer.
Another interesting question is why the hell was an Austrian (who had been in prison for attempting a coup d'etat) allowed to be chancellor in Germany.
>>
>>2177998
But Hitler had the largest party in the Reichstag. It wasn't the majority, but in terms of number of seats, it was the largest.
>>

>why the hell was an Austrian (who had been in prison for attempting a coup d'etat) allowed to be chancellor in Germany.
well.. the Weimar constitution allowed tradition judges who were very right winged to keep their place in power. so when Hitler went on trial he spoke about Nazi propaganda and was very patriotic. This won the judges over and he got a light sentence.
>>
>>2178419
You're right. The Weimar consititution had no handicaps for small parties such as D'Hondt method or a minimum % requirement to get a seat in parliament. This enabled "Splitterparteien" (small/fragment parties) and made it harder for bigger moderate parties to get a stable number of parliament members and to form viable coalitions.
About Hitler's past, it's clear that there was nothing against him going into politics, as you said, since the judges were forgiving and even supportive to him, but most countries don't allow foreigners (or even nationalized people who were born abroad) to get the most powerful political roles. For example you can become governor of a state if you're a foreigner but only people born in the USA are eligible for president. I guess the Weimar consitution didn't have such a requirement either.
