I do. I see Slayer as proto-all things I hate. Thrash can be ok, it's not my fav genre but I do like me some Metallica and Megadeth. But guess what; both had some nice vocals, some great melodies, and rhythm.
Slayer is too much hardcore punk (the most degenerate genre there is), and too little music. There's no singing; little melody; no rhythm; just pure autistic speed, abrupt chord changes and dissonance.

Well… Yes? S/T (or "black album") was already pretty controversial and took out much of their thrash roots, but after that I don't even want to listen to be honest. Then again, almost every band going for so long will output shit in "few decades" after its inception.
I am not a huge fan of thrash and thus Metallica as I said, but I do like their '80s work, and I still listen to Kill 'Em All occasionally.
Slayer though, I enjoy for speed, technical aspect, and a little bit for the aesthetics. I know people like them… But I just don't. This is the line for me after which unlistenable metal starts. All that doom, black, death, whatever tryhard metal. Honestly, Alice in Chains is better 'metal' for me than that.

Sounds like Priest/Accept meets punk/metalcore, so not those modern genres I referred to per se. It's pretty good, at least it has melody and good lead guitars.

It's ok if you don't like harsh vocals and blast beats, they're not for everyone. Imo there's really good metal that utilizes these techniques among others to create really powerful and emotional pieces. There really is a fine line between good atmospheric dissonance and pretentious hackage, but the day you feel shitty enough that the whole black metal thing clicks will be the day you start to gain the ability to recognize that line.

That said, if you're a Sabbath guy, check out some of the more bluesy subgenres that really take after them. Sleep, Kyuss, Samsara Blues Experiment, dopelord, to name a few.

Heavy metal used to have melodies. Randy Rhoads was one of the most influential and proficient rock guitarists of his time. Eddie Van Halen, although tangentially metal, also had amazing skills. Jake E. Lee, John Sykes, Glenn Typton… Don't give me shit please. They wrote actual music, unlike any EDM or hip-hop artists.
I'm not saying it was the peak. There was also prog and stuff. But it was great for what it was, fun but interesting musically too

Yeah, I do occasionally stumble upon some surprising finds. Once saw a metal essentials chart on /mu/ which I can't find now, there was one album which really caught my attention. Though it was all those things—screaming, math rock, etc—it was actually well put-up and had some logic to it.
But then it made me wonder—why make it both "smart" music and screamo blastbeat stuff? Felt like a hybrid of clashing things, to be honest.
I do know though I'm more of a heavy metal guy than anything else.

I could try and explain the appeal of the screaming and blasts but it probably won't help much unless you hear it in the right mood. Essentially there is an intensity, an emotional intensity, that a lot of black metal artists chase. When you are trying to present an emotion that is so raw, massive, and personal, a normal singing voice is way out of the question. Next time you are going through hell and feel like snapping, throw on some good black metal (could be Burzum, Darkthrone, Drudkh, Leviathan, whatever, people will give you shit no matter what) and it might not seem like it's clashing.

I love black metal but I hate 90% of "black metal", so that's what I mean by personal.

Also good for if your in a blizzard or have a sucking chest wound. Almost becomes comfy.

No arguing here. When it comes to opinions, I'd associate them with hard rock more. But at the end of the day, the line between the latter and heavy metal is pretty thin. Many bands got lumped as metal in the '80s when they played the same old blues/rock'n'roll.
From what I listened to, Blackmore never really went for that distorted sustained 'metal' tone. I'd say the same about Dio's solo career, but it's always like proto-metal in my eyes.
