Fucking god damn, yes.
Devy is great, but in all honesty, some of the orchestral work on Deconstruction is simply amazing

i know vivaldi is really repetitive and he uses the same kind of progression over and over but i just like the tempo of his works and yes the beginning is always the best part of his pieces but they are still a good listen

Also, Shostakovich 5 and 7.

only the ring cycle, to be honest. I own audio recordings of Solti, Karajan, Janowski, Keilberth, Goodall, and Bohm, and the most recent Met production with Levine/Luisi
>>
>>745282985
First think I learned how to play on the piano.

Used to practice it on a big grand in the clubhouse where I worked on Marco Ilsand as a security guard in the middle of the night. I wonder if it's still standing...

That giant piano made everything sound fabulous, but barbers adagio probably even made the dolphins off shore want to commit suicide.

Lolol, you should totally play Berg's Violin concerto just to fuck with your listeners a little bit. Because it's beethoven chorales and shit interspersed with wacky Schoenberg melodies.
>>
>>745283618
interesting, I'm not familiar. I'll check it out. endless great recordings of the symphonies. Hogwood's cycle on period instruments is enjoyable. Fricsay and Karajan both have reference recordings of the 9th (karajan recorded the cycle 4 times I think, but I think it's the 1963 one that's considered the best)
>>

Beethoven's 4th is very underrated, the second movement is possibly Beethoven's prettiest
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xgni7AzF-fI

Schoenberg's 12 tone music is very divisive, but his romantic stuff is unbelievable
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-pVz2LTakM

>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p9OBf8f55tU

The New World Symphony by Antonin Dvorak gets me harder then anything. The last movement of it especially.
Holy fuck just listening to it again to post is giving me chills all over.
>>
>>745284069
tbh I'm not sure what the most difficult piece would be that a morning host has played. honestly I'm probably the most conservative of the morning hosts, which is partially my own taste but also out of respect for the people we get tuning in.

most out there stuff I play is generally some Strauss tone poems (Ein Heldenleben, Don Juan, Till Eulenspiegel)
>>
>>745280085
yeah, i saw a brief "making of" video, and i couldn't place all that orchestral work in "poltergeist", but seeing Devy at the desk with a frown of intense concentration reminded me of pics of Beethoven.

it's weird, either people have never heard of Devin Townsend or they're fanatical enthusiasts.

you poor guys get the Tuba Mirum from Mozart's Requiem and the Bolero and that's about it. but seriously, Strauss is great. I've played a few others but I can't remember right now.

not a ton of Berlioz -- I'm always on the lookout for more that I could play. Symphonie Fantastique, the Roman Carnival Overture, the march from Damnation of Faust, and that might be it honestly

And basically all of Wagner lol. You'd be surprised actually; fewer and fewer orchestras these days ask for tuba mirum for principal trombone auditions. They're more interested in the alto work in kyrie.

That's all you really need with Berlioz lol.
>>
>>745283924
Wow. Thanks for the rec! I've been listening to the piece for about 25 years and I'm always surprised if I go a while without hearing it, how much my memory tightens up the crescendos and lets other parts breathe, while my actual recordings are nowhere near as brilliant as my imagination. This is off to a great start!

there's a recent cycle on Brilliant Classics with Blomstedt and the Staatskapelle Dresden that's good. but for standalone recommendations, Kleiber's 5th is the all time great (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RKcAAA1O2sc) and Bohm's 6th is very nice. I like Bernstein for the 3rd. Don't have strong recommendations on the others.
