A couple weren't shot dead immediately. 2 were brought to hospital, one died later. I didn't read thoroughly didn't see what happened to other but assume dead. I would guess some of them may have tried to stop him but got shot doing it. Like you say it is hard to believe they all just stood there and did nothing. Even if they ran, you can't outrun a bullet.
