because they are told to do x. in an unknown, threatening situation, you easily give up decision making to people, you believe know better. and since teachers are told to stay in the class and lock the door, they will tell the students to stay put. leading to horribly massacred classes.

Its a Prisoners Dilemma problem. If you rush the shooter, you're more likely to die than someone who doesn't rush the shooter. So the correct move is to hope someone else neutralises the shooter before they get to you despite the fact that the best odds for all involved come from everyone rushing the shooter.

It's always easy to say what'd you do in these situations without the gun actually pointed at you. Someone walks into your classroom shooting a gun, the sound of the gun, people screaming and getting shot, you'd be in so much shock it would be hard to process what's happening. I think the phrase is "a dear caught in headlights" sums it up well.

For highschool shootings I often wondered how no student or group of students attacked an attacker too. I figured there'd be at least one case but I guess the overwhelming majority of humans take flight instead of fighting. I can't blame them though, I mean it is them vs a gun. Maybe it's also just a natural thing for developing minds to flee. There has been a few instances where teachers have tried to stop a shooter. We should educate students better on how to prevent themselves from getting hurt in that situation: don't hudle together, don't run in a mob, listen to teachers and other adult instructions, stay together if 5's if possible. And I know this part would be hard to get passed but maybe offer a self defense course like how they do drivers education.
