Shipping to basic next week. My recruiter gave me a 4 page packing list but it essentially instructs me to bring documents, shaving equipment, running sneakers, and casual clothing for graduation after the two months of training.

Should I bring more items such as deodorant, towel, toothbrush, etc., or will they provide to me everything I'll need for duration of the training?

Pic related. I'm becoming an Airman.
>>
>>743823935
Why don't you just ask your recruiter
>>
>>743824099
I'd just like to hear it from someone who's gone to basic recently. He hasn't been in basic in 10 years, so many things must've changed within that decade.
>>
>>743823935
You will buy everything there so you need enough toiletries to last about 3 days.
Also letters and stamps, and stationary tons of them. I brought a shaving mirror was the best idea i had through basic so i could shave away from the mob trying to use the mirrors
>>
>>743824253
you might have better luck just watching some youtube videos within the past year or two that have info like that. Other than that I haven't been in basic so nothing I would know about that.
>>
>>743824099
Theyre really fucking forgetful about how shit bmt is.
>>
>>743824492
Toiletries and shaving mirror, got it. Thank you sir
>>
>>743823935
LOL nigga I just fucked some guys gf who's graduating, pack yourself some will to live if you got a girl back home
>>
>>743823935
Went through bmt August of last year. They issue you a backpack full of toiletries and supplies and shit so you really don't need to bring any of that.
>>
>>743823935
Protip bring tweezers or forceps, they will make your bed look SHARP!
>>
>>743824654
Make sure its plastic and not bigger than your palm or youll get it taken abd if it breaks you get to explain why you just made however many shards worth of weapons
>>
>>743823935
Yes, bring all that and if you're a ginger, bring sun screen
>>
>>743823935
you dont need to bring a lot. i brought way more than i actually needed. however that extra stuff was useful at tech school
>>
>>743823935
you wear your blues at and after graduation
>>
>>743823935
Oh man, basic.. those were the days. Get used to saying; "Sir/Ma'am! Trainee -your name- reports as ordered!"
>>
Oh if you play an instrument never admit to it!
>>
>>743823935
Currently at Tech school, went to basic a couple months ago. Dont bring anything other than a couple changes of civilian clothes, and some running sneakers. They make you buy a backpack the day you get there, it has everything you would need (Shaving stuff, toothbrush, shampoo etc). If you have any questions ask away man.
>>

Shit, me too. Went to bmt in 1982. Good stuff

All the stress makes it hard to remember, also bmt was probably close to a decade ago for them.
>>743823935
During basic, there will be a few visits to the BX where you can buy toiletries. And If I remember correctly. Within the first week the whole flight goes to a BX to get the mandatory items (towels, gloves, hats, toothbrush/paste(I think), flashlights, undies, some other stuff).
>>
>>743826502
is shepard as shitty as they say? i went to tech school in keesler

yup, i dont remember as much as i should about basic. i do remember that my flight was fucking awful tho

Pretty shitty, but not too horrible. Other than the heat, constant marching (while in uniform), and other bs stuff its alright. I don't mind it too much tbh... it is what you make of it. The internet is pretty good though lol.

Sir, no sir!

Try to go in the end of summer if you have any ability to weasel your time frame, black flag gets tedious if its too hot for several days

>>

Gotta get used to sweating in uniform so they can fuck wearing it
>>
>>743823935
bring some nice clothes with you, at the end of it all they let your roam around san antonio for a day or two so you might want to look decent

This.
But fuck canvas pants in all seriousness, get me some summer uniforms with sweat holes for the deep south fuck.
>>
>>743823935
Welcome to San Antonio and lackland afb . Ask your gawd damn recruiting officer. Go to a spurs game and missions game. Alamo and river walk are shit but do it anyway. Take a bible. Fuck you, you'll need it. La Fogata twin towers margarita. Not on the menu. Just do it. Thank you for your service, faggot.
>>
>>743827542
they make you wear blues in san antonio
>>
I'm in DEP anxiously awaiting a contract. I qualified for linguist so hopefully soon since that field has a lot of demand
>>
>>743827542
Yeah bring some khakis and a polo and some shoes to wear that arent completely athletic. 20 out of 66 dropped out or were removed for health out of my bmt flight so
>>
>>743827542
Actually, dont. You have to wear your blues while walking around the city, cant wear civies. Any extra clothes you bring will have to wait to be worn until tech school.
>>
>>743827602
don't they give you a day where you can wear whatever you want? i was able to wear normal clothes for one day i think
>>
>>743827635
good luck, ive heard thats a tough one
>>
>>743827572
Lol
>>

Not lately, idk if theyre still letting jr enlisted leave the base in uniform
>>

we didnt get to. its possible thats because my flight was the worst there, but i didnt hear of anyone else doing that either
>>
>>743827635
Nice man. 18 months learning a language in California, hopefully you can get it!
>>
>>743827635
Do something thats actually fun. If your eyes allow you go flightline. If not then go medical field linguists get taught kurdish and farsee and shit and its useless after the af. Its also a bloody field mind you. Your srb is earned.

you cant wear civilian clothes at the end of BMT, you gotta be in Blues while on town pass in San Antonio. sucks, but thats just how it is.
>>
>>743827932
Nah i graduated oct of 2015 and separated right after tech school because my family travels for work and i lost my clearance....
>>
oh yeah, you werent allowed to leave off base in uniform because of the a recent shooting at a recruiters office. i guess i just got lucky enough to wear civis out there. its not like it matters though, they can tell you're military from the shine on your head.

Honestly i never wore my abu off the base unless i had to. Its like a big bullseye on your back and i couldnt conceal carry because enlisted lyfe.

>>743823935
Make absolutely sure you wear an Air Force shirt to BMT. Have to let the TI's know you're there for the Air Force

t. flightline guy for the past 7 years
>>
they give you an entire backpack full of everything you need. hopefully you don't get the one squadron that has the old shitty dorms.
>>
Oh and buy the foot powder, the medicated one at the BX. Youre gonna need it, dont even use it until the last week of bmt, my flight had an athletes foot outbreak because of some nasty fuckers. Youre sharing a shower with 60 people, remember.
>>
>>743828911
Butcha get to fly.

>>
>>743826502
Oh shit! You're headed to sheppard. That's where I am at right now, that's my afsc. Sheppard is good, don't listen to people who are downers. Basic will make you feel like shit for three or four weeks but the second half is easier if you aren't a dirtbag. And if you get hurt keep your mouth shut about it unless there are bones sticking out of your body. Don't bring shit for clothes, you will be in uniform 24/7 and during graduation you will be in blues like some other guy said. No civilian clothing until you earn it by phasing up in tech school. Just so you know, your squadron here at sheppard will be 365. You will earn the privilege of civilian clothes after 28 days without a failed room inspection and two open ranks inspections of ABUs and Blues each. You'll learn air force core values in basic and people will tell you in tech it doesn't mean shit but I promise you if you follow them you will skyrocket in whatever extracurricular programs you choose when you get here. I'm F-15 avionics and we have the longest school here so I almost guarantee I'll still be here when you get to tech school, but under no circumstances short of an act of God will I ever admit that I know you because I heard of you through 4chan lol
>>
>>743829422
If you're in one of the few jobs that allow you to fly. Flightline squadrons generally consist of weapons, crew chiefs, and specs(electrics, avionics, engines). As far as I know none of them fly. If you have a college degree you could try to be a pilot though
>>
>>743830306
How are the dorms at Sheppard
>>
>>743823935
Buy everything you mentioned but in travel size, you will buy new things when you get to lackland.

The only two things you need to do in BMT to be successful are: Be respectful to everyone and listen to your MTI. Do these two things everyday and I promise that BMT will be easy as fuck.
>>
>>743831823
They're nice, 3 airmen to a room though, so it can feel a little much at times.
>>
>>743833326
3 wtf? Thought it was 2. How big is the room. Don't 2 dorm rooms share 1 bathroom also. Do you have a key card?

bruh, if youre at sheppard right now, whats your last name, im avionics, were in the same squadron

Pack light. You're going to get there, and you'll be allowed to keep some stuff, but the majority of it is just going to stay in your bag which gets put in the storage closet, which you probably won't have access to again until the last weekend there.

Bring all required paperwork, especially banking info as you'll be setting up direct deposit when you get there.

Just bring clothes for 2-3 days, and toothbrush/paste for the same, and a razor. They don't have time to check/compare if those health items are adequate for each trainee, so you're basically told to buy them all again anyway, and end up with duplicates.

Oh, and don't look military or wear any service's clothing/mark, as you'll be singled out right away.
>>
Holy fuck, do not bring a shaving mirror!!!! Hahaha!!
>>
>>743834772
Why
>>
>>743834542
Oh yeah, and you'll probably be made to buy them again, but shower flip flops. Bring those for the first night or two, you'll want those.
>>
>>743834863
You're not going to have the luxury of time for such things, and look silly if you bring it. So you'll get shit for bringing it, but never even get to use it.
>>
>>743835048
?? you have to shave no matter what.. How does having your own mirror not benefit you
>>
>>743827635
don't listen to other comments. you will work in nsa basement and hate life. hope you're spanish so you can pick up mexican chicks.

am linguist
>>
>>743835251
They're going to find that mirror in your wall locker upon inspection and be like "Looky here, this guy likes to look at himself, he brought a mirror!"

Honestly, the chances of you getting shit for it aren't worth the trouble when you can "just hurry the fk up and shave like everyone else".

If you make it through without getting shit for it, you either got an MTI that doesn't care or lucky. You still have to crowd around the sink to get water for your razor anyway.
>>
>>743823935
They give you All the shit. Just bring three days of civilian clothes to wear until you get uniforms.

It'll be tough, but for the love of god/zeus/buddha/satan/kali, do NOT quit. They'll send you to a containment/separation flight where you'll stay for days, possibly weeks before being shipped back home and being marred with shame and guilt for years (not to mention being unable to reenlist in the AF or possibly any other branch depending on why you were separated).

You buy everything there at the mini bx, if you shave a lot you can bring your own razor handle and just buy blades or get an electric one and touch up every night. Comfortable sneakers, plain black flip flops you'll get wet, and stamps. Things you'll buy there:
>towels
>shower stuff (soap and a lufa if you use one)
>blades and cream
>Tupperware containers
>FLAT toothbrush case
>toothpaste
>lint roller
>sewing kit with nail clippers
>pens/pencils
>deodorant
Everything else is issued, you might have to replace your laser if you get shitty luck and it dies on you. Don't be a pussy.

>>
>>743838638
Yeah even if you are, most arent able to complete it. Due to injuries and other things. And you'll most likely get the boot.
>>
People will tell you never to volunteer for shit. This is true right away, because some TIs like to abuse the faggots that will beg to do anything to suck up. But after a week or two when the TI knows you, there might be decent volunteer opportunities. There was an opportunity to be in the Air Force band that I passed up volunteering for. It would have been a whole shitload better than sweating my ass off in the job I had signed up for.

Just keep your head down for the first few days, listen close, and do the things that are asked of you. Don't do extra shit, don't do stupid shit. If they ask you to run a distance, DO NOT DROP OUT. Completing, even if you take forever will raise you in the estimation of the TIs.

About tree fidy
>>
>>743823935
I was at Lackland in 2000. They told us to bring a bunch of shit, but here's the thing, everything you bring will be the wrong shit, and it will be a fucking problem that your TI will use to rip you several new assholes over continually. Worse, if you're a youngin, it's all you will have that will remind you of home, especially, those poor fucking kids, if your mom helped you out by going shopping with you and buying that shit for you. You will form a fucking emotional attachment to your little bath towel, and they will point out that it is not regulation, and if you ever use it even once, it will not look brand new, and therefore look used (dirty, even if it's cleaned) and be out of regulation, and they will wear you down until they get you to decide to throw it away, which, the longer you have it, the worse that gets. Boot Camp is easy, but 100% psychological. The point is to break you down, and build you up again. If need be, several times, until you are as close to a blank slate as possible. This is necessary for a number of reasons, but they will use the tiniest of things to drive kids to the edge of suicide, and only after you all get out, do those kids start to readjust and repair their grasp on reality. Then again, everyone in my flight was going into space command, so we got Marine drill instructors for TI's, whereas a lot of the other flights clearly had an easier time.

I lucked out by joining at 27yo, so I got appointed latrine queen to keep me away from the more impressionable kids who were still fresh off the teat. I enjoyed it, it was like going to summer camp for a few months.

...yeah, on that. That 8 weeks, can easily turn into more if anything unusual arises, and often enough, something does.

Heres a good tip. Pay close attention to the TI's ID CARD if you get EC duty.

Sometimes they will use fake ID's. Do not let him or anyone in if they arent on the list. I dont care how Mad they get. They will threaten to kill you and all kinds of shit if you dont let them in. DONT DO IT if they are not on the list and match the ID/Face/and list on wall.

>People will tell you never to volunteer for shit. This is true right away, because some TIs like to abuse the faggots that will beg to do anything to suck up. But after a week or two when the TI knows you, there might be decent volunteer opportunities.
I was told this too, and it was good advice for the first few days, but after that, and don't be a showy cunt about it or you'll get assigned to do horrible shit, but when they ask for volunteers for shit, often times if you're willing, it will be worth the risk.

>There was an opportunity to be in the Air Force band that I passed up volunteering for.

Same. So fucking stupid of me. "Anyone know how to play guitar?" I've been playing for 21 years, and say nothing. Every time we see cake flight afterward, they're standing around at ease, in the shade, never doing shit, eating their own food, and not getting screamed at. Meanwhile I have to move a trench in 120deg san antonio heat with a negro forest ranger shouting at me. God dammit.

I fired everyone on my latrine crew. Had to. I was getting hauled out of bed at 2:30am every night, and the more people we had the more the Ti would fuck our shit up. Eventually I made it about him vs me. I slept in the latrine and any time anyone would walk in I'd wake up and make them wipe down the entire fucking stall before they walked out again. If anyone left a mess for me to clean up or bitched, I denied them latrine priviledges and made them use the field latrine for a week. I was a bastard, but in the end I won.

I actually got a coin from our wing commander.

Please tell me you had Ti Pendleton. That big scary motherfucker was rigid as an oak tree and had eyes on every side of his head, and let not one fucking thing go unpunished ever.

Honestly you don't need any of the shit they say to bring, you will have the chance to purchase whatever you ACTUALLY need when you're there. Everything you bring with you will be a burden, it will be shit you'll need to take care of and keep track of. They will find a reason your shit "isn't the right stuff", you'll have to buy new shit anyways and then clunk around all your extra shit.

All you really need are the clothes you wear on the flight in, a towel you're ok with throwing away once you buy a "regulation" one, and like toothbrush, toothpaste, and a 3 in 1 body wash.
Protip: buy the all in one shampoo, face, and body wash. DO NOT USE A BAR OF SOAP, DO NOT HAVE A BUNCH OF SEPERATE SOAPS/SHAMPOOS.

Shower time will be limited so just grab an all in one and just smother yourself with it.

As far as everything else just hangout in the middle of the pack. Don't excel even if you can because then they will purposely try to teach you a lesson on failure. Don't straggle towards the end or they will ride your dick until you improve or drop out.

Hangout in the middle and stay unseen. Nothing matters in basic other than graduation, if you graduate bottom of the class or graduate as the class leader/honor student/whatever you go to tech school all the same. NONE of it is tracked and nobody gives a shit when you go to your first assignment.

"security forces"
aka
Gate guard.
Don't be a gate guard or mp, you won't have friends and nobody will like you.

This.
They got a fucking General visitng the base to come up and knock on the door. When a guy with stars on his lapels arrives at your base in a limousine with several other cars in front and behind him all with those little flags on the corners, and drives on to the fucking field where the entire base is having a parade for him that we all spent days rehearsing, and that fucker comes up and knocks on the door and wants to see the dorms...

you still gotta refer him downstairs. The poor fucker in the flight across the hall didn't, and the only thing worse than being chewed a new asshole over not letting a General in for a peek, is being chewed out by that General who knows full well what you're supposed to do in that situation. It was not a pleasant experience for them after that.

>NONE of it is tracked and nobody gives a shit when you go to your first assignment.

This is true.
For a lot of people, boot camp is one of the craziest things they'll ever do, and it is one of the crazier environments you'll ever find yourself in, but it has almost nothing to do with anything after that.

The idea of a draft has a lot of ups and downs to consider, but boot camp... boot camp I think should be compulsory for everyone between graduating high school and starting college.

>>743842534
Just to do it.
There's no real point in most of what you do in boot camp. You just do it anyway.

That sucks dude. I was there about the same time as you.

The saying goes, the fastest way to leave basic is to graduate.

enjoy being a young airmen :^) 3P051 in ALS, line number, and doing 7 level CDCs, feels GREAT -.- E-4 will be literally the best time of your life regardless of AFSC

>>743842817
What if you fuck someone up tho
>>
>>743843407
You put them in a box and they take them, you can use them to call home when you get there and your 6th(?) week of training phone call
>>
>>743843083
With that do not get hurt or sick. Don't go to sick call for stupid shit but if you're getting sick get it taken care of asap.

DO NOT GET HURT, if you get hurt you could spend months in a hellhole of an out processing unit, I got sick in basic (army) and got two days of quarters (without being recycled thank god) but I got to see the hell that broke dicks and washouts had to live in. Some had been there for months.

So be careful, don't do anything stupid and dangerous. If you end up getting broke you're career is fucking over.

What if I tape it to my dick so I can browse 4chin at night night time?

You will get caught, other people in the bay will rat you out. Breaking the rules, any rule, will result in mass punishment along with individual punishment. If you sneak/hide food, your phone, tobacco, fucking break any rule, you're entire group (I was army so it was platoon, but i imagine it's a flight in the AF) will get fucked up and suffer.

in 2009 people got kicked out for sneaking in their phone. At night you're going to shower and go to bed, you'll be too tired to stay up and fuck around anyways.

Personally I didn't both writing letters or any of that shit, my family wrote to me but I focused on myself and enjoyed an extra half hour or so by going to bed instead of writing.

I've done a few years of university and have a good bit more maturity and know what to expect than i would have had fresh out of HS. I think I'm up for the challenge and love the idea of getting to immerse myself in learning a new culture and language
>>
>>743843995
Yea figures.
Though I am concerned about the snoring situation. And what if you can't sleep
>>
>>743843707
Yeah no, the MTI's would destroy you and you'd get separated, but the fact one kid had his phone up until week 2 because he came a day late and try never collected it
>>
>>743844185
You will be tired enough to sleep.

You, and everyone else, will learn to sleep anytime and anywhere.
>>
>>743844185
You'll sleep or won't sleep because of fire monitor, trust me you won't just "be unable to fall asleep"
