While there is SOME truth behind your apparent fear of wearing steel toe, you're mostly wrong. Most factory/machine jobs won't have anything that will immediately crush steel so far as it being an actual hazard. Unless you're within close proximity of something that will immediately run over/stomp out/fall on your toes from a great distance, with great weight, wearing them is fine. Which chances are, you're fine.

We use excavators/skid steers/large tractors to push steel frames on trailers just to get the doors closed almost daily where I work and they hardly put a scratch on it them. I've had 300+ pound elevators fall onto my feet from 12+ feet in the air and not hurt them.

Worst thing I ever saw happen while wearing steel toes was an old co-worker walking a horse, who jumped and landed on his right big toe and bent the steel enough to get his toe stuck. No actual damage, just a stuck toe. A 1,200 lb animal jumping on your toe is highly likely much heavier than anything you deal with at your factory job other than the equipment itself.
