I used to work at a restaurant that did an annual dinner for masons.

We called it "Steak and Hookers". They insisted on all-female staff working the event. We instructed all the employees to NEVER be alone. If they had to hit the bathroom, they were instructed to leave the floor and use the one on the main floor in the lobby.

To be correct the 33rd degree is honorary, it is the last degree in the Scottish Rite arm of the fraternity. There is another arm called the York Rite.
The person talking about the bad behavior and drinking of Masons were probably actually talking about Shriner's. The Shrine is another arm of the fraternity. You have to be a Master Mason to enter any of the three arms but you do not have to join one of the arms to be a Mason. I found that most Shriner's only become Mason to become a Shriner and they do so for monetary reasons.
