I have only refused tipping once. And it was one of those "if you have six or more at the table, 15% is tipped automatically on the check" incidents. Waitress was utter shit at her job, got every order wrong, was visibly sitting in the smoking section smoking the whole time while talking on the phone. We had to get another waitress to refill our drinks, correct our order, get desserts, etc. It was terrible. Fought with the manager for almost fifteen minutes to get the tip to go to the other more helpful waitress instead. It was one of the better laughs in my life when the first waitress called us racist for giving her tip to the white waitress who did her job for her. In fact, because of that remark, we gave the waitress we transferred the tips to another twenty for even finding time to fit our table into her other responsibilities.

I worked as garbage man for a season and I got paid 7€ per hour (tax included) for collecting garbage and shit under the hot sun 8 hours per day in the summer.

Nobody tipped me, nobody thanked me for cleaning the environment and hiding the degeneracy of my countrymen who throw shit and cigarettes on the ground, nobody talked to me because I was a fucking garbage man covered in sweat.

A waiter/waitress can legally be paid 0.00$ an hour as long as their tips reach minimum wage, and if their tips don't reach minimum wage, that's when the employer shells out some money. If they actually get a position where they get minimum wage from their employer in addition to tips, that's really amazing, and depending on what state you live in, that might be the case, some states allow 0$ wage as long as tips cover it or the employer covers it if tips don't, others require minimum wage, and tips are just extra.

TLDR: If you're debating whether or not to tip, look up the state law, if the employer is required to pay them minimum wage, tipping is polite but unnecessary. If the employer is not required to pay them minimum wage unless their tips don't reach minimum, then give a big old fuck you to the employer and don't tip, make it come out of his pocket not yours.

my family owned a restaurant for two decades before selling it and they paid everyone there $12/hr (this is during the 90s too) and had plenty of money left over to cover expenses.

I only issue a tip for good service.

I like to play a game when i go to restaurants and I am 100% up front with the waiter or waitress. I say "I will tip you 100% of the cost of my meal if the service is out standing".

See I have a very low opinion of everyone I meet and i have yet to be surprised by anyone so i always win betting that they would preform below standard.

So through out my meal I keep notes on how the service was. I do not make it complicated by ordering weird stuff or being overly difficult. Things like having to ask to get a refill or to remove plates or to have sweet ice tea that is brewed as sweet ice tea and not to just have cold tea that has sugar in it (trust me there is a difference) and each time the staff fails to complete one of these tasks i deduct some percentage points from the tip. I also take into consideration how the food tastes because i have noticed that when the food is good people tend to tip their waitress more even though they probably had nothing to do with how the food tastes so i think it is fair to deduct points for bad tasting food.

I think it was the 4th time i paid 0% tip this little child of a woman came out to me in the parking lot throwing a tantrum (negative points for the future, i remember these things) demanding to know why i didnt tip her after she "did her best".

I said "On numerous occasions i asked for a refill on my drink and ended up asking someone who was not you to finally get a refill. My steak was over cooked and the potatoes were cold and the lettuce was wilted in the salad (this is typical for most steak houses because they don't know to keep the salad away from the hot lamps). The table was dirty and the silverware had spots and old food shmoo on them. You left my salad plate and old drink cups on the table through out my meal and when i asked for a check you took 10 minutes to bring it to me."

She says "None of that is my fault"

i take pride in the moment, after paying by card, when the receipt comes out and they see the 0

it makes me happy seeing the defeated look on their face.

i am glad that i earn enough to pay for an expensive meal, and that I can act as a contributor towards the waiter's inevitable realization that it is only themselves holding them back.

they offer no productive contribution to running society and act only as a member in the service industry, which exists only to serve people's desire for consumption.

therefore they are deserving of no recognition, only the dissatisfaction of knowing they exist only to serve me and my desires.
