Do you get a lot of addicts/homeless people claiming they're suicidal so they can stay the night and get meals? I work as a crisis worker and run into this all the fucking time. Never follow up with treatment, DNS all over face sheets, multiple involuntary commitments (despite probable malingering)... Do you have any suggestions on weeding them out from the mentally ill that DO actually require state intervention? Meth use has spiked in my area and has made diagnoses very difficult for someone with possible bipolar or schizophrenia (who is also positive for meth on intake).

That's tough, our mental health system is in shambles, and people with true psychosis bear the brunt of it. In my city, our psych hospitals and shelter are literally rape/drug-dens and are livign hells, so most homeless/psych but-cant-care-for-themselves have learned they're better off fending for themselves. The unlucky few that try themselves at my ER get shipped to an off-site psych facility for evaluation, but even thats a disatster for patients, them and us.

Honestly, theres no good way to tell. I set limits to what I will do to help someone in that situation, and i rarley go beyond that. Im fortunate that I can always walk away or pass the buck. Unfortunately, your job is to care for those people, and the harsh truth is that there are a LOT of people who will take advantage of that. It's OK to let people get the better of you sometimes, dont let it ruin your day/career. Find happiness outside of work

I've dealt with this. I'm not a doctor but I'm a hospital security guard in Canada. We usually tell them if they're not here to seek medical attention then they are to leave. Most of the nurses reject them in triage and then they go batshit. We get in, arrest them, and have police either continue with the arrest, or escort them off to a homeless shelter. If they come back for the same thing, the process is repeated.

Two time L4 and L5 disectomy. I go to the doctor for some muscle relaxers because pinched nerve and this mother fucker has the gall to say "now this is strong stuff, don't take too much of" while handing me a script of naproxen 500.

Mother fucker refused to believe the surgery until I had to physically take my shirt off. Like shit, im not trying to pay specialist money for something a general practitioner could perscribe.
