Really your best bet is to not sit and stare at it regardless. Just take a glance every once in a while. You'd probably do fine without any glasses doing that, but the special shades would make it more comfortable and certainly safer to do so, even if they're not perfect for staring straight at it for several minutes straight.

Okay, there used to be a total solar eclipse where I live in 1999. The media went apeshit how half the country will go blind because they will look at the extra toxic eclipse waves and instantly go blind. There were constant warnings on TV, my 4th grade teacher wouldn't shut the fuck up about it, science illiterate parents also went full panic mode and started lecturing us kids day after day before the eclipse.
