The original 5 states all explicitly list slavery as their primary reason for secession in their declarations though. I get that it was about cheap labor and profits more than some missionary vision. Of course that got retconned after the war with that whole Texas decision. iirc the Confederacy had sold some bonds that were owned by Texas in order to raise money for the war. After the war, Texas wanted its money back. Long story short, the court ruling hinged on the idea that no state had actually *left* the Union during the Civil War so the CSA's sale of the bonds was illegitimate. Officially, at least according to that post-war court decision, the CSA was never actually a separate nation so it was "we put down a rebellion in some of our states" instead of "some states formed a separate country so we conquered that country to get our states back".
