Me and a couple freinds went car hopping once in my parents neighborhood, once we were done we went to their house and my mom offered us a ride home so we took it. The next day we loaded up to go again in our neighborhood and we went a few streets over, immediately get stopped by a cop. he radios in that he has "3 suspects that match the description" then walks over and searches us but we had only found one thing in a mailbox so far, luckily i thought it was stupid and threw it down a sewer drain like a minute before they showed up so his search found nothing and they let us go after 21 questions and the usual cop routine. needless to say, never did that that again.

However in this case, seeming you didn't gain entry or damage the car in any way, the police are unlikely to waste their time on such things, this is unless of course they have an interest in identifying persons of interest if the community is complaining enough for them to actually catch thieves.
Police 9/10 times will show up hours after such calls, and only to give you a statement for your insurance company, and only if you insist and chase them up about it. They have very little interest in doing actual police work on this scale, even if you have video or photo of the thieves.
