Very nice! What strings you got mang?
>>

just generic ernie ball 9s. i dont really consider strings to have the craziest influence on tone so i just go for something easy and cheap.

Beginner guitar player here. I bought off an rg350dxz from a friend who apparently didn't like it, and i have a used Vox VT20+.

Side note apart from the rig, anyone have any playing tips? Like what should i develop/make a habit as a beginner.
>>
>>741473516
i've been playing for about a two years. and tube. its what i've always been used to, in guitar stores when trying out amps i've just enjoyed tube amps much more. never enjoyed digital that much. but i dont mind solid states.

voxs are nice. not too bad for beginner. and tips i would reccomend just do scales. constantly. just always try to learn scales. it lets you improvise and make up licks so if you get lost in a song while performing you can just do some shit in the appropriate scale and just play your way back in the part.

it's relative tho, tone comes 90% out of your fingers and 10% out of your tools and as far as i'm concerned, heavier gauge of strings produce more tension on the guitar thus a richer more dense tone considering that more energy has to be put into the attack to make them vibrate

speaking of vibration, thicker/heavier gauge tend to produce a louder sound because of the extra amount of material and velocity produced from the tension they put on the guitar

SRV in his prime used to rock .014's strings(taking into consideration that 0.009 are ultra light gauge, 0.10 light and 0.11 medium gauges) and that's one of the main reasons he used to have the fat tone he had

but Tommy Iommi had an injury to fingers which led him to play 0.008's and he still had a great tone so it depends on a bunch of factors

>Heavier gauge needs more energy
You just confirmed that you know nothing about what you're talking about and your post may be disregarded.
The thinner the string the easier it is to bend, but the lower the volume since it won't vibrate as much because of the lesser tension.
Obviously a higher gauge is the complete opposite of that.
>>
>>741475116
SRV also tuned down to Eb. Fat strings and down tuning is the secret to good Strat tone.

I've been dicking around with the guitar for a few years and just got it and I feel like it's made me a lot better in a matter of a week.

I always just played acoustic but now I'm getting more into electric and I'm wondering if any of the modeling amps are any good. It would be nice to just dial up the tone for a band and jam instead of needing 500 pedals.

I'd say electric as well.
But I'd have to disagree with the other anon who said the strings are stiffer. This all comes down to how the guitar is set up, and in an electric you get to have a say on how it plays.

Electrics are also a bit more forgiving for beginners, you can set them up with high action if you like to strum hard, or low action if you have a light touch and like to shred. In acoustics, unless you're a builder and know what you're doing, you're basically stuck and have to stick with how it was set up from factory, action and intonation wise.

>>
>>741480396
what does metal mean to you meshuggah and disturbed?
>>
>>741479844

Here is what has an effect on sound:

1. Wood (basswood and bubinga aren't the same)
2. Pickups (no name pickups are shit)
3. Strings (Pure nickel for me, not steel)
4. Cables (cheap cables cut high end)
5. Overdrive pedal (The standard is the Ibanez 808)
6. Amp (this is the obviously very important)
7. Speaker Cabinet (low end or no end, your choice)
8. Speakers.(read Celestions have much larger magnets than even low end Celestions)

I had a friend once that had no idea pickups make a guitar sound different. My mind was kind of blown, he had been playing 7 years but never compared a Strat to a Les Paul.

1. Wood does not make an audible difference on an electric guitar. Wood doesn't have an effect in the disruption of a magnetic field, which is what an electric guitar sends a signal of, a disruption of its magnetic field.

2. I will agree on the pickups, they do matter, but to say that no name pickups are shit is an understatement. Of course if you mean generic $10-15 a pair pickups, then yes I can agree, but it's all dependent on their magnetic and electrical properties.

3. Agree.

4. Cheap cables do cut high end, but this tends to happen more on the longer side of cables as well as passive pickups. Try using an active pickup with a cheap long cable, while there is some loss of signal, its very minimal because of the preamp.

5. Same is true for any other effect being applied.

6, 7 & 8. Agree.

Wood has an effect on the way the strings vibrate.

A three piece neck through guitar with alder wings is going to be more responsive than a basswood guitar with a maple neck.

The biggest thing you will notice is "attack" when you hit the strings with a pick.

Basswood and bot-on guitars often have a "dull" attack compared to guitars made of harder woods.

Harder woods don't just add more clarity to attack, but they also result in more sustain.

I have played the same guitar with a mahogany body compared to a alder body and the attack was noticeably different, without the guitar even being plugged in.

believe what you want, once you realize that wood selection is purely done by cost you'll see things differently.

I'm a luthier, I build guitars for a living, I wouldn't want to screw anyone off with the belief that wood makes a difference.

No tree is the same, no guitar is the same, you can find a guitar that's made out of alder but sounds like its korina and vice versa. It's too much of a variation that comes from building tolerances than the result of the species.

Think about it, if wood made that big difference then all guitars would be made of what is a "superior" wood.

Bolt on guitars sounding dull... don't you think that has more to do with the fact that it could have a shitty neck pocket joint and the waves don't transfer well. The same could happen with a set neck if it has too much glue.

Harder woods having more sustain is bullshit. I have a guitar made out of basswood that has more sustain than my les paul custom and they're both TOM bridges. different bodies to be fair, but still. The way the strings are attached matters more. The fact that a fixed bridge results in less frequency being absorbed has to do with this, not anything else. The harder has nothing to do, the denser yes.
>>
>>741482649
I pretty much made myself learn how to cut w/ right handed scissors and pretty much everything else to jerking off and what have ya. Writing left handed and playing so sucks the big fuck, tho. Those two I couldn't pick up right handed wise.
>>
>>741482806

I know a lot more than you might think.

I'm also a luthier and the answer to your question as to what the superior wood is, it's likely Swamp Ash that has been through a baking process.

There is no denying that basswood and purpleheart are extremely different woods.

There are woods like Lignum Vitae that sound like metal when they are hit because they are so dense.

So the ideal wood would be something light, stable, and hard. Like baked swamp ash.

Factors that make woods sound different:

1. Grain consistency
2. Density
3. Weight

I know some woods can sound wildly different, but that has a lot to do with lack of grain consistency.

Why not make everything from pine and see how that sustain dies, or make everything from ebony and see everyone complain about the brightness.

It's literally acoustic physics, it's not even an opinion.

Then again, depends on the glue. Bone glue hardens to a rock-hard mass. You could probably put half an inch on it in your joint and it would still sound great.
As to bolt-on guitars, I hear many snobistic opinions about them. Mine sound excellent.

Yeah, but equally important is rhythm. Seems that people gravitate towards one or the the other, but the reality is that you need both if you are going to be a competent instrumentalist. For as much practice as it takes to get get good at scales, there is little glory in being a shredder.

i can't sell any of my good stuff. nobody knows what it is. i have tens of thousands of pounds worth of studio & guitar equipment that may never sell.

i got so sick of people arguing about how digital couldn't possibly be different to analogue, it was mathematically impossible.

every time you play a gig, 10 guys want to come and give you advice.

turn up at a party and people pull out a guitar and want you to play but they don't really want you to play, they just want you to play one song so that gives them an excuse to play for the entire night, inflicting their endless ego-driven foolishness on everyone.

musicians and working/socialising with them ruined music for me. guitarists are the worst. by the end i'd just give my gig money to another kid so he'd set everything up for me and i just could come in play and fuck off again.
>>
>>741485945
Yeah, man. It's good to have the skill set, but more often than not you find yourself pulling it back. I'm kinda going through the same thing.
>>
>>741486739

Classy selection of instruments /b/ro.

All you need is a Les Paul and a P-bass, a Rickenbacker bass, a Jackson Soloist, and Meshuggah signature guitar and you could rule the world.

Also a 5 string Warwick Dolphin and maybe an Ibanez JEM and also a Dimebag sig for the lulz.

God Bless!
>>
>>741486411
Yeah, broseph. That's what i said, what I meant. Practically everything he played was a cover, and when compared to other guys that played the same covers (Hendrix, for instance), Stevie comes up short everytime.

However, this is just my opinion, as obviously musical taste is extremely subjective.

people are just fucking dicks, in all walks of life. what happened to just getting on with things with the tools at hand instead of endlessly discussing the tools themselves.

I got the J after a string of pretty awful budget basses, so i took a chance and ordered it. I don't exactly regret it, but I've come to realize that there were better choices I could have made if was more patient/researched better. I just liked the way neck felt on the J's I had played so thats what I went with. Personally I also think a 5 string would be too much for me.

At least you got something that keeps it's value.

Thats one thing I learned about buying instruments. I do lots of research and I try to pay less than half for things in excellent condition.

I have had a few surprises, like peeling the velcro off the bottom of an Ibanez TS9 to find out it was the special Japanese one. Spent $60, sold it for $300.

I don't flip gear often, but you could make a lot of money if you know your shit.

yeah but its a reissue of the original redmond's sea salt from 1965. its been hand-abraded because that tastes a lot better than when its done by a machine. the packaging is corrugated cardboard, and I don't care what people say, 90% of the taste is the the packaging, the other 10% from the atmosphere inside.

So you can tell what wood a guitar is made from in a blind test, right?
>>
>>741484351
>Why not make everything from pine and see how that sustain dies
Pine is an excellent body wood and doesn't lack sustain at all. I have build several pine strats and teles that sound great.

The main reason it's not used more widely is because it dents easily if knocked, not because it sounds bad.

It's too soft for a neck wood obviously.

it depends of the music you play and if you play lot of leads and stuff. heavier strings have longer sustain and richer tone (i.e. they give stronger signal).

Randy Piper had the ugliest guitars.
Who the fuck wants a guitar shaped like a bunch of pipes?
>>
Did you know that Dave M. was one of the first King V customers for Jackson? Here's his first guitar. He also kept the same guitar for few years and kept modding it. I always thought he had shitloads of guitar but until early 90s he only had ~3 guitars which he used live.
>>
>>741492792
And iirc Robbin Crosby got the first King V ever made? Or at least the first iteration of that. Since he was a big dude, they made him a "double rhoads" model, which was like a King V but with longer wings.
>>
>>741493129
Yeah I think so. And only after few custom only runs they started to mass produce them in early 90s (?) . I'm not 100% sure about it but probably very close.

It's also funny to see how cheap they were even after the inflation applied. Because these days custom shop stuff is easily over 3k. And you can't get Ernie Ball Music Man Petrucci model even for that. Then on other hand there are now so many different models which are mass produced in oriental countries. There are more guitar brands than ever in the history and yet, the amount of guitar players are on decline. Jazz and Rock are considered to be on decline. Sad.

I've got a Switch Revolution 6 string, the black model with the Floyd rose. I've had to replace some hardware and I changed the stock passives to EMG85 bridge and EMG81 in neck, so I had to do some fiddling in the control cavity. So not stock, but still looks fine as hell. Fairly rare-ish guitars, I love it though. Will never get rid of it if I can. I'd post a pic but I have none currently. Regardless, Switch guitars are pretty neat.

My dads got an old danelectro that's pretty rare, worth like 2400 bucks or something. But I know pretty much nothing about it.

Obviously not mine but that's what I have. It's 2007 as far as I know. Usually Deans suck but this one seems to be okay. When it came from factory the tuning pegs were loose and bridge wasn't properly screwed... But otherwise it's great, ultra loud and sharp tone and plays well and stays in tune. But word of advice: don't buy Dean, unless you get old ones built in USA.
