No. The cult following resulted in the audience having a heavy investment in characters who were never intended to have that much development. The original episodic nature of the show was a better format, but if continued wouldn't have pandered to the show's newfound following who demand a story.

It's not going to be as good as it was at first. But if they stuck to the original format they would have been taking a much greater risk than by telling the story everyone (most fans) are asking for. It's not the fault of women or men or reddit or whatever, it's just what happens when something gets popular.

This summarizes the "big picture" of why this show is getting worse. People seem to insist that stories and movies need to have some sort of in-depth character development. This really contradicts the premise of the show, along with Rick's character. You can't have this old crazy scientist who has likely trashed several parallel dimensions get fazed by a therapist discussing trivial family issues. If these issues were really getting on his nerves, why not just hop into another dimension? He gives zero fucks about his family in the Cronenberg dimension, so why should the show depict him in being invested in the family he has now?

I did say I didn't think the show was ever that good.

But on this point, the unity episode was much more creative and interesting, and it had funny parts too: race war, rick gliding into a stadium fully of red-heads, etc. In "Pickle Rick," he just turns into a pickle and fights some rats. There is nothing funny there. And the counseling session is not deep or revealing, just boring. Who cares if Rick lied to Beth? How is that new?

Finally, I don't mind a show having an emotional aspect. There are plenty of South Park episodes that have involved emotions e.g. the one where Stan becomes goth (butters getting dumped scene) or the series where Stan starts seeing everything as shit. These involved emotional issues, while still maintaining their hilarity and spontaneity.

I mean, imagine if South Park did a therapy scene! It wouldn't be boring as in "Pickle Rick," it would be something hilarious and absurd as with Mr. Mackey or that guy who couldn't stop joking about Penn State.

The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewers head. Look, the problem was that it wasn't trying to fix shit but it took like an entire episode just so they can start working on their issues.
Beth's abandonment issues are well known but it was beaten to death in this episode.
The entire episode 3 had very little, weak jokes that also had a shitload of setup. Almost as bad as the new SouthPark seasons where an entire season is used to setup a joke in the season finale.
It's fine if it's done well but the problem is that there is nothing in between.
The action in Pickle Rick was dumb but nice I guess.
You could cut the entire episode down to 5 minutes and would lose nothing.

I liked the first two episodes this season. Pickle Rick didn't make a whole lot of sense, and the episode seemed to be just "LOL Rick turned himself into a pickle." It basically felt like the whole pickle rick commercial over a 30 minute time span.

Something I've noticed tho is it seems Rick does his signature burps less this season. Dunno if that's just me not noticing it, or if he actually is doing it less.

I had an idea for the simpsons. Like mid season, lisa isn't feeling well, they take her to the hospital and HIbbert finds that she has childhood leukemia.

As the season progresses she tries alternative medicines a-la Steve Jobs and continues to get worse and worse until the penultimate episode of the season where she dies. Exit Yeardley Smith and her sanctimonious Lisa Episodes. We have a very heartfelt episode that ends with marge going up to the bedroom. Bart and Homer are downstairs and hear a loud *CRACK* followed by another *CRACK*. They go upstairs only to find Marge has committed suicide and apparently shot maggie as well.

The final episode is them wrapping things up a-la Maude Flanders, emmy nominations abound, etc.

Then the next season,It's the New Simpsons with Bart and Homer getting into Wacky Hijinks. Dating new Mom candidates, Bart gets into wild adventures. And you know what happens?

The simpsons becomes funny again.

I just fucking love Rick and Morty, in the way that I fucking love science. It's so random and cool - it's like the show was designed for us 4channers, see? My mom says I have an unhealthy obsession with the show, but she just doesn't understand how funny it. I wish I could live in the Rick and Morty world and be their friends. Everything would be really and cool and funny if I did. Rick and Morty are so funny and I'm so awesome that it would make perfect sense, but it'd be even better if Bernie Sanders appeared. Anyway, back to the topic at hand: Rick and Morty! My favorite character is Rick because his style of humor perfectly reflects that of 4chan.
