Tipping keeps a lot of shit in line. More than you realize. Yeah, its a sucky and imperfect system, but tipping keep the prices on your bill lower by 30% to 40%, a lot less than the 15% to 20% you might tip for a good server. I've worked in and managed restaurants for 20 years now, trust me when I say you'd much rather be given the option of shelling out to a server than you would see that reflected in the bill. The state I currently live in was considering getting rid of employee tipped credit and raising the wage of server to match a recent increase to $12.00 an hour. It would have been an hourly wage increase of almost $10 more per server, per hour. On a weekly basis just a place with ten servers working full time would have been paying out an astronomical amount.

Corporate places also love any excuse to hike up menu prices. If you want to start a non-tipping movement, go right ahead, but you'd be surprised what it keeps in check when its gone.

I've worked serving and kitchen jobs at tipping establishments.

1. If service was decent, nothing spectacular, nothing went wrong, just in and out, tip 10%. You're the type of table that was a side-thought. You didn't ask for anything special, just drinks, food, bill, ciao. The server didn't make your food, possibly even deliver it (depending where you work). They punched your order in and checked on you. 10% is more than enough.

2. If service was good, and contributed to the night going smoothly, tip 15-20% based on what you feel is right. If you asked for special orders, or called the server over multiple times, etc. This of course is if there was no problem, etc. Basically if the server helped make the meal pleasant.

3. If the service was exceptional, amazing, etc, then get into the 25% range, but that's rare and shouldn't be expected.

Finally, if the service was shit or below par, don't tip. It's your right to tip, as you obviously all know. Not tipping sends a message saying "I feel your contribution to this meal was 0". If that's true, totally fair.

If you don't like tipping at all, then don't go out and eat in a country where tipping is expected. Move to Europe. No one will consider you an asshole for not tipping there. Here, not so much. It's a cultural practice, not a mandatory one. So yeah you can bitch and moan about how it's not your responsibility, but servers have the right to consider you cheap and stingy considering you have alternatives to going out for a meal.

That being said I love listening to servers cry about not getting tips as I finish up a 10 hour shift without breaks and go home with minimum wage in my pocket. Tip-out is a joke as well.

If someone does a good job I have no problem giving 20%, my issue is that 90% of servers are shit. I wish I could just grab my own damn food and drink and clean up the table when I'm done. For example, one time I went into a restaurant that had a promotion for a free appetizer, I have a friend who also works there. I kindly mentioned the free appetizer and she goes oh of course. In many states, state-mandated minimum wage for servers is something like $2.50, because it's expected that they'll make up the difference between in tips. Federal mnimum wage does not apply to servers, salaried positions or to those wo do "piece work".

In many states, state-mandated minimum wage for servers is something like $2.50, because it's expected that they'll make up the difference between in tips. In fact, the feds and some states that have income tax, tax servers as thouh they make minimum wage whether ot not their tips actually make up the difference.

This is why its important not to tip, but to leave a cash or cryptocurrency GIFT to your server, as it does not technically count as taxable income that way and cannot be traced even if some asshat decided to try and count it as such.
