Sup /b/? Bought a 9mm 4th gen glock 19 for my first handgun. Good choice? Bad choice? Interested in opinions of well versed gun owners and of course a few of you pretend internet knowitalls too. So, what do you think?

Please move this to /k/, thank you.

Good choice, dont let anyone tell you otherwise.

Post on /k/ though

No. This is the board I use and these are the degenerates whose opinions I want. Move on to the next thread if you don't have an opinion.

>>740611176
pretty good choice. it's like buying a honda civic as your 1st car; it will do the job but dont expect anyone to be impressed
>>
You should take it and blow your brains out you cuk
>>

Great platform to build from shoot it and become comfortable with it then put sights on it maybe a trigger ECT ECT

Fair enough. I drove Honda shitboxes most of my life anyhow. And I don't think my first handgun really needs to be flashy anyhow so I'll take it
>>
>>740611176
Great choice for self defense, always ready
>>
Pretty great firearm! I own a 17, a 19, and a 22 and I prefer the 17 over the 19 because it fits better in my hand, but they both function flawlessly.

If you ever want to get a really nice handgun for more precision shooting I recommend the Sig P226, a nice long-barrel revolver, a nice 1911, or the M&P Pro series with the upgraded triggers. Honestly, a lot of accuracy "issues" come from junk triggers along with a failure to follow the fundamentals.
>>
>>740611176
>>740611413
It's a good starter gun. Like he said. Easy to use and comfortable to hold. Don't wanna start out with something too strong. First gun I ever shot my grandpa loaded a 12 gage with a 3 inch magnum when I was 13. Thought he'd get a laugh when it blew me back.
>>
Also interested in gun show experiences if any of you guys have them. I chose to purchase at a gun show but I know they can often be more expensive if you don't really know what you're doing. I paid slightly less than retail
>>
Have a 17 19 26 and 34. Love them all the perfect platform for shooters / defenders of all skill levels. great guns good job op.
>>
>>740611413
Actually it's more like the only people who will care are the same people that think Honda Civics are gods gift to humanity.
Glock fanboys are the equivalent to Honda fags
>>
>>740611869
I was actually looking at a 17 and a 19 side by side when I made the choice. Do you have big or small hands? The 17 just seemed a little smaller and less comfortable to me and I really kinda fell in love with the way the 19 felt
>>
It's a solid gun that will be ok for you. Not the best gun out there (even for the price IMHO) but still it should run well for years.

I would;t put a lot of money into modifying it personally. If you want to build up a competition gun or just a better performing one I's get something with an aluminum frame as the base.
>>
>>740611890
gun shows tend to be hit or miss, but i rarely find anything that is a good deal that i cant pass up.
>>
>>740611918
I drive a 2005 civic but I'm not a fag about it. Pretty fucking great filling my tank bi-weekly on average
>>
>>740611176
Reliable but boring.
>>
>>740611890

Gun shows can be pretty hit or miss. They sometimes have great deals on ammo, but other than that it's kind of hard to compare.

The last gun show I went to I saw a sweet FNX-45 with the suppressor sights in FDE and it was going for significantly less than what you could find online at Buds, Impact, GunBroker, etc. As soon as I mentioned that, this guy overheard me and immediately came up and purchased it haha.

On a side note, I hate that a fair amount of politicians quote the "gun show loophole". It's pretty rare to buy a firearm at a gun show and not have to perform a background check. The majority of vendors at a gun show tend to be firearms dealers and they're required to run background checks for their sales.
>>
>>740611918
Nothing wrong with an efficient machine/tool that is proven to be affordable and reliable time and time again though. The whole point of a gun is for it to work when you need it to
>>
>>740611176
Hang Yourself
That gun is shit and wont finish the job
>>
>>740612067

I have pretty large hands. The 17 is the full-frame Glock and the 19 is the compact with the 26 being the sub-compact.

There's a reason Glock sells heaps of the G19, it's a functional/flexible firearm that's dead reliable.

I either carry my 1911 or my LCR-357 in my holster...with the spare LCP2 in the pocket if dress allows.

sadly, a gun that looks good in fb selfies seems to be more the trend lately.

Great gun for range shooting and such. I found I never needed 15 capacity for concealed carry, too many rounds.
I switched to the 43 with +2 mags and it conceals better and I do not miss the loss in capacity at the range.
Still, can't go wrong with a Glock.
>>
>>740612446
As Jeff Cooper wanted.
>>
>>740612266
I did really love the compact 19 as I think it will be a better feeling carry
>>
>>740612531

Haha! :)
>>
>>740612173
On top of that you'll have ATF agents or other LEO trying to spook people with "legal non transferable" supperessors and machine guns from their car trunks
>>
>>740612601

Oh yeah for sure! That's the whole reason I got the 19 is for when I make the decision to actively start carrying. I also have the XD-S for the same purpose. Both firearms are fantastic, but I much prefer the XD-S for accuracy and the 19 for reliability/capacity. That pretty much means the 19 will be what I carry.
>>
>>740612682
i only buy such things from people with vans.
>>
>>740612682

And I personally agree with the NFA laws regarding machine guns, but they really need to back off of suppressors. Machine guns are only viable for war whereas suppressors just don't fuck up your hearing.
>>
>>740612216
I'm not saying it's a bad gun but it doesn't suit all my purposes. I have a 19 and its fine but I also have other handguns for different purposes. Every glockfag I talk to says I should've just gotten a glock instead of whatever handgun I buy

Yeah I know I probably won't need 15 rounds to carry because if it takes you that many you likely should not be firing, but I took it to the range and having a couple magazines at 15 was pretty nice

Oh, and if you do carry that, then load it with DRT's, they are an awesome accurate flying frangible round.
>>
>>740613274
Do you carry frangible ammo exclusively
>>
>>740613177
from my experience critical duty isnt the best from short barrels, sometimes has expansion issues due to lower velocity. I run HSTs in all of my handguns.
>>
>>740613274
frangible ammo is mediocre compared to modern JHPs. Unless over penetration is a major concern, it is mostly a gimmick that I would not trust my life with.

This
>>740611273
It's called random for a reason m8. Or would you rather deal with log threads and ylyl bananas
>>
>>740613093

That's not necessarily true. Unless you're the all-time God of being cool in life-threatening stressful situations, you might even need more than 15 rounds.

People often forget that adrenaline kicks in when you're in fear for your life and you lose a lot of the control in a firefight that you might otherwise have available when you're just out at the range. That's one of the reasons why tactical firearms training courses will tell you to operate the slide with the overhand pull/release instead of utilizing the slide release button and such. You tend to lose fine motor skill when under stress and trying to hit that release is much more difficult than just pulling back on the slide to put the firearm into battery.

Bill Geissele (the trigger designer) talks about his military triggers in a similar fashion. He explains that trigger control is very difficult in a stressful situation and that a trigger pull under about 4.5 lbs can prove dangerous for soldiers under stress because they may accidentally discharge their weapons.
>>
i personally am not a big fan of glocks because I dont like how they fit my hand but the plus side is. Tons of after market parts ready available and cheap so easy to modifiy. Amazing reliability. Also glock has one of the greatest customer supports I have ever seen. A buddy had a recoil spring mess up when he was cleaning they sent him a new one no questions asked.
>>
>>740611176
It's not bad. Not too good for people like me with larger hands, feels a touch too small. It is somewhat comfortable and accurate enough to do 4" groupings at about 20 yards. It's a fun gun, just not my brand of whisky. I still prefer my M1911A1. My Grandfather's service weapon he "lost" in Europe. Sure, had to replace the recoil and sear springs and the hammer strut, but the damn thing is still a beautiful piece of hardware. Might have to replace the safety plunger, spring, and stop. It's getting a little finicky, and I'd rather not replace too much.
>>
>>740612981
What purposes? I'm not competition shooting or anything, just staying sharp at the range or concealed carry
>>
>>740613723
the rule of thumb for this is take how far you can shoot accurately and cut it in half for actual situations as long as you dont freeze.
>>
>>740613723
Fair points. I won't be carrying until I'm very comfortable in more than just range accuracy
>>
Well, since we got a bunch of gun fags here... I've been looking into getting a pistol. I have a preference for revolvers... Mostly a safety reason, but the looks appeal to me as well. I would prefer a .357 or a .44. Anyway local pawnshop had a .357 that had been augmented with a sight and shit for $699. I felt that was kind of high. Recently I found a .357 at a sport shop for about $459. At first I thought it was a .22lr from the size, but they confirmed was a .357. Is that a good deal? Price isn't really the issue, I just don't want to overpay. If I wanted to be a cheap ass I could get a .22lr revolver for $127 at another shop

Pawn shop's was obviously a lot more heavy duty and ment for hunting, sports shop one looked more like for protection or shooting range... I don't need one for hunting cuz I have a perfectly good 30.06 that'll kill damn near everything for that.
>>
>>740614333
Good idea. Depending on your range you use, an idea would be go for a long run immediately before you shoot. Switch between sprinting and jogging as much as you can. Then, within a few minutes of wearing yourself out, shoot at a target at minimum of 10 yards, shooting about 1 round a second or less. That'll give you an IDEA of how well you would do in a moderately stressful situation.
>>
>>740611176
If it fits in your hand, if you feel comfortable shooting it, and if you can group your shots well with it then you bought the right handgun for you. Shoot straight and stay safe /b/rother.
>>
>>740614454
Are you plinking, shooting, hunting? Is it for defense? What's the main reason for getting the pistol?
>>
>>740614454
I would say that's gonna really depend on the brand of gun right?

I was a Glock hater until 1990. Shot a 17 for the first time, and I was sold. There's a reason more police use them almost exclusively. And, the Navy Seals just switched to the 19.

I own many others, Colt, HK, Sig, S&W, I still go back to my Glocks for EDC.

Perfect choice for first gun, but every one already said that. Just upgrade the cheap plastic sights, most my friends put the trijicon night sights in, but I like fiber optic. Also, plastic guide rod should be swapped for metal one for true piece of mind. Probably over kill considering it's probably not a duty weapon, but you still are betting your life on it.

Millions of other accessories for it out there, so you can play operator for fairly cheap, or slick it up into a race gun.

Just sold mine and graduated to a 1911 a couple months ago
>>
>>740614454

If you're worried about price and shopping at a pawn shop, then don't worry about the price. You're guaranteed to buy something and see a better deal somewhere else in the near future.

If you want it for "safety" then pretty much get whatever you want. It boils down to your personal preference on
A) how big of a frame you want to try to conceal (if you're gonna carry it)
B) how comfortably you can shoot with that frame/caliber size.

Revolvers are hella reliable so just go find a place that rents guns, shoot a bunch and narrow it down to what YOU want, THEN go shopping with that in mind. Makes buying guns a lot easier when you know exactly what you want after trying them.

But I only own one firearm and rarely shoot, so I could just be spouting bullshit

I'd recommend a S&W 686+. It'll give you 7 rounds of 357 (or 38 special for plinking if you like) and you can get it in a 2 1/2 inch, 4 1/4 inch, 6 inch, or 7 inch barrel length. It's a S&W which generally means that it'll have a super smooth trigger pull and will be put together better than some.
>>
>>740615321
Do you feel good about the switch up? I will not be buying a new gun for at least another year cause I'm broke now
>>
>>740615592

quit bitchin, the Gen4s are fine. They had early teething problems like most guns which was remedied back in 2011. The more aggressive grip texture is another needed improvement, gen3 was slick as hell.

>>740615776

The shield is great. I got mine earlier this summer and just got my $75 rebate check in the mail, so the gun cost me under $300 after rebate. At full price I still think it's a good choice, mine has been 100% reliable in the ~700 rounds I've put thru it so far.
>>
>>740615776

Wow suburban people are pathetic
>>
>>740611176

I'm not a Glock fan but it's obvious that younger guns prefer them. I like S&W revolvers.
>>
Any real difference between the gen 3 and gen 4 btw?
>>
>>740616377

Gen4 has a more agressive grip texture, larger mag release, dual recoil spring system, and replaceable backstraps to adjust the grip size.
>>
>>740615675

What he said. S&W .357/.38... I like .38 Special. You can buy .38 Special + loads which are a lot more snappy. I can't see any need for a .357 Mag... that's just too much for me.

If budget is a concern, go EA windicator. Great price, reliable. Little bro had one he loved. You can get them in a 2" snub nose or a 4". I'd get a 4", save a little more to upgrade the sights (they're straight black and I like contrast to get my eyes to line them up faster) and be done under $400.

If you're willing to spend more Smith and Wesson is the way to go. People recommend Ruger as well. Their gp series has great reviews. I just don't like the grips on them.

Just stay away from Taurus

As I said, my 30.06 does me fine in hunting. Would mostly be for shooting and plinking. I live in a low crime area. Don't need to worry about muggers or anything so defense is pretty much useless. Most people carry a pocket knife max for defense, which I have. At worst, someone breaks into my house...and gets met with a shotgun barrel pointed at them. That keeps loaded and nearby in case of a Coyote or bear comes at my dog.

>>740614896
That's a good point. Didn't think to ask the brand... However the $699 one was definitely higher quality. Wish I'd taken pictures of the guns to show.

>>740614962
Mostly concerned about whether or not I'm being ripped off. Considering the bows there were upwards of $1000 and the power bait at the sports shop was $6.99 compared to the pawn shop's price of $3.49

All in all... Mostly I just like guns, but I don't look into them much. I own 2 shotguns and a rifle. A 12 gage and a 16 gage Springfield and a 30.06 Remington 76 pump I inherited from my grandfather.

what they're talking about with that doesn't have anything to do with those shows. it'd be like if i was walking by you on the street and you opened your coat and said hey kid wanna buy some candy? and you got a bag of candy in your coat you're showing off. instead of candy it's guns tho. it's so fucking maddening that so much of this anti gun legislation is so bad and unreasonable. it's so obvious someone like the politician that makes these laws actually likes guns, is simply trying to make the dumbest sounding argument and laws in hopes their friends... or at least most of them just say no to it. but instead their friends just always go along with it.

Yeah, when I first got into guns I bought the whole idea of safeties get you killed, they make you complacent and you'll ND, or you'll be too stressed to figure it out in a gun fight and you'll be killed, but after being exposed to real training instead of listening to mall ninjas online, I realized the consequences behind a ND and all the liability that brings.

Plus the 1911 has a grip safety that goes down to disengage. I love that because it goes with the natural movement of your thumb when gripping it. I hated the M9 because you have to flip it up with your thumb. It's not nearly as natural a movement and I feel it slows down the draw.

Looking around I realized a lot of pistols have slide mounted safeties that flip up, and I stay away from those.

Plus that sweet beaver tail safety.

Over all, I'm super confident in my carry, knowing I'm not going to accidentally blow apart my leg, can easily disengage safeties when needed, plus I still have around a 5lb pull which means it's about the same amount of force as my Glock had, but it's single action so it just breaks and then resets. Virtually no other movement, for quick, accurate groups

Also, I feel obligated to say this now that I own a 1911:
>Muh fawty-five

Bought the same one so i could put a bullet in my head one day

No but he was a biker, I remember seeing it in the "glove box" (dk what proper term is) on his harley, I assume that was a main reason he had it. He also had a raven .25 in there but those are pretty useless. But when we would go camping or to the city he would always bring it. Kept it in a leather zipper case with a couple speed loaders. Finish is pretty much perfect on it

i though that what it was called but i didnt know if those were just the ones on the side, this one was upfront between the handle bars, not that it really matters. I hope to take some lessons and get my motorcycle endorsement soon, i fear im quickly getting too old and less risky, browsing rekt threads daily doesnt help...ya the raven is shit, cant hit a man size target past 10 feet, is very compact though

also, i remember him telling me a story about how he got pulled over on his bike and the cop asked if had any guns and he said yes. Cop was mexican, was not amuse.

Bikes seem like they'd be fun to go cruising. Seems like a rich persons toy kind of thing for the most part can't think of any way to make cash with one so I lost interest in them years ago.

For compact those ring of fire guns seem like real lemons, got a mouse gun myself so I can see the appeal in having small ones

If a round is stuck, firing it would just expand the casing to make it even more jammed in place.
>>
>>740620988
richfags ride BMWs and shit, they are not true bikers. I wouldnt mind one just for cruising but i'm not about to just jump on one and needlessly go risk my life on my dad's '75 Harley. should probably start with something with a less steep learning curve. yeah mouseguns are mostly just for making noise and scaring things off, no real self defense potential otherwise

I wouldn't start off with a harley either, I think you got the right idea on that. Been in way too many situations in my car where I'm driving around kind of wishing I had a bike but then I have to slam on the breaks or see other people doing some stuff and think I'd just need way too many hours of driving one than I could likely get out of it and a lot of luck.
My mouse gun is in 32, I think it's got enough potential to stop the biggest baddest mother fucker around if he's trying to pound the snot out of you with his fists.

That pony gun just been sitting around? I was checking my revolver and noticed the oil on it spoiled and started making the extractor stick and adding weight to the trigger pull. Was a real pain in the ass finding some tools to take it apart was meaning to see if I even got the right punches to knock out some pins holding it together today.
>>
Best gun for home protection for a gun noob?
>>
>>740621572
BRASS GETS WORK HARDENED. it expanding from being fired is going to make it less malleable. firing off the wrong round in a barrel it wasn't made for can make the whole thing kaboom. If you have any guns you should sell them.
>>
>>740621402
>>740622033
>with his fists.
* or a shank
unless he's got a bowie knife or a katana 32 is probably going to cut a lot deeper than whatever he's using
>>
I've owned just about every mass produced handgun available in the US .
H&K ,Sig , S&W , various 1911s , Rugers,
Berretas, Taurus PT92s, CZs ,Springfield XDs,more then I care to even mention.
I've put thousands of rounds through them .
In the bio metric pistol vault beside my bed are
3 Glock 19 Gen 4s .

Mine,my wife's and an extra just in case .

All firearm advantage/dis are a trade off . The
G19 Gen 4 has a superior balance of advantages and dis-advantages .
>>
>>740622033

>>
>>740622376
after some research, some 32acp loads arent too bad as far as penetration/expansion
>>
>>740622404
Probably a good idea.
I'm use to cleaning after use, and if it's not passing a function check. Kind of want to get a semi auto just for ease of disassembly and maintenance.

I know taking the cylinder off isn't an issue since it should be obvious if something with it goes wrong looking at the ratchet parts but I can't help but feel like the timing could get thrown off. Been trying to time it so I could go shooting after I clean it just to make sure.
>>
>>740623217
I wouldn't risk using expanding ammo, accidentally bought a box of it once, I'm kind of thinking the round I actually got was okay simply because it should fail to expand while having a flat nose with only a tiny point indent so it should work a little more like a wad cutter than a HP round.
>>
>>740623252
ya semi-autos are easy as fuck to clean
>pull back slide
>move takedown lever
>clean
>put back together
>tada!!
>>
>>740623217
>>740623436
Wouldn't use it with a 32*
Revolver I can just pick up semi wad cutters but all the commercial hot loaded rounds for what mines chambered in hollowpoints. I just don't trust that bullet design very much. Really feel like HP design is intended to be more cruel than lethal.

My first gun was a Glock 19 as well, anon. It's a great starter, but I think you'll find soon that you want something more fun. Out of all the guns I have, I shoot my Glock least often.
>>
>>740623605
barrel length is also a big factor of bullet performance.

bmpp
>>
>>740611176
Yeah it's a good EDC gun. Easy to maintain and use.
>>
>>740623869
Yeah. That's true, I just think hollowpoints either fragment or lose so much velocity from expanding they don't have enough energy to penetrate sufficiently that it's just designed to create a bunch of non lethal smaller wounds intended to bleed stuff out slowly rather than immediately incapacitate. I don't think the barrel length is much of an issue with that.
>>
>>740625586
all i know is i wouldnt trust my life with anything less than a 9mm
>>
>>740626266
I have the patience of a saint, haven't been in a fight for years. Odds of having to use it are pretty slim because my charisma dice roll usually turns out pretty good. I'm fine with it as a better than nothing sort of thing.
>>
>>740627083
ya always ok to have a plan b
>>
>>740611413
This. And if you want (Unlike a Civic), you can get some shit like Salient Arms modifications and really spice your Glock up.
>>
>>740611176

Glock 19 is pretty much the standard. It's pretty vanilla, you won't make any dicks twitch with it because it's a common gun, but it gets the job done and it's a reliable firearm. It's small enough to conceal, and at 15 rounds has a high enough capacity to fit the role as a duty weapon for police or military (though it didn't get picked for the military, but this was due to modularity and cost reasons).

As a first handgun you probably couldn't pick a better one, honestly. I gave this very handgun to my nephew as his first handgun.
>>
>>740611176
What do you intent to use it for, retard?

Actually, it doesn't matter: a glock is fine, but you could do better by going with something more task-specific.
>>
>>740611176
If your into plastic and crappy triggers that cool I guess. Seriously though, I know people that shoot glocks and if thats what your into more power to you. I'm just not a big fan. Give me a steel gun with a real hammer (even a wheel gun) any day, but whatever floats your boat.
>>
>>740611176

>>
>>740611176
I'm a bit of a glock fanboy myself, but personally I think as long as your gun doesn't go click when it should go bang, it really doesn't matter what the fuck you're carrying - they all do the same thing and no one wants to be on the other end of it.
