As far as I know, films are still filmed on physical media (not sure if reels are used) and the master cuts are preserved for years.
This is how they resell films as remastered with upscaled resolutions. A digital film, made of pixels can't be upscaled ever, but a piece of physical media being scanned has no resolution tied to it's dimensions, only size and clarity, so they keep physical copies and once every few years, they scan and retouch digitally, rerender, and edit the cut down to a new release.

And thats how you get the Lion King or Toy Story remastered in HD when the films was made before that was a standard, or the upcoming Dark Knight films in 4K. Physical media exists and they preserve and use it for that reason.

Theatres and consumer level release is still digital, but I meant master copies for editing were physical, that's the only way they can retouch or remaster the work, by keeping the originals and working from them. Then the finish the project, lock them back in a safe or vault or whatever until the next jump in resolutions or newest feature of TVs and players.

In the meantime, the finished project is burned to blu rays or dvds or streamed or whatever other methods they can come up with, and that is what reaches the consumer, us.

I haven't kept up with the technical aspects of the film industry as much as I used to, but from what I understand, back in 2007, they were pushing to full digital, and by 14, I think ALL movies are fully digital now, from camera to editing, to distribution.
The ONLY reason they would put movies back on celluloid is for archival purposes, or, like with Nolan ryan, for special shows.
Hell, I think only recently have some movies been shot on film again because of the current rage of nostalgia.
For all intents and purposes, working in digital is shittons easier then the old 35mm process.

I will admit their stuff has been somewhat weak the last couple of years.
Planes is not done by pixar, thats handled exclusively by disney
I havent seen the good dinosaur yet, so I can't comment (to my shame)
But I loved inside out, and having a dry three years is still megatonnes better than say dreamworks, who haven't had a special thing going for them outside of kung fu panda and how to train your dragon.

Pixar's only "lame" franchise that they put out for that I can think of as actually unenjoyable has been cars. I liked the first (though it was a tad more simple) and I think having only two not good films is still leagues ahead of so many others in the industry. Compare dreamworks.

Then mid 2000's they moved to 3D with Chicken little and Bolt which were.....yeah ok
and seemed to give up hand drawn entirely until princess and the frog, which was Ok, then they just let pop musicians and celebrities take care of their money for them while pixar did all the animation work

Then Rapunzel was really great, and the first tim in a long tim a film made me care about the romance between two characters (my timeline may be mixed up here, this is all from memory)

At this point they go quiet when Kung fu panda hits and remain that way until frozen brings them back from the precipice of mediocrity in 2013

They strike while the iron is hot and make big hero 6 (i liked the idea behind it and enjoyed it throughout but felt that the hero stuff was shoehorned as there wasn't actually any heroics or action happening, so the film lost it's identity in the last third of the film before the reveal, and it picks up at the end)

Then Pixar steps back after the cars 2 fiasco with new stuff like inside out and a roster of upcoming things, and they both feel like they are going strong as Moana and Finding Dory release

Honestly, pixar have had a dry phase in the last couple of years (especially anytime they fucking touch cars)

But they are without a doubt on top of their game in terms of quality over quantity and knowing what they want from films

This combined with the powerhouse lineup they have next year and the year after and years to come (toy story 4, and the incredibles 2 is going to change lives my friend, I dont see any way that film wont be one of the highest selling animated films considering the hype behind it for the last 15 years)

Pixar is in a very strong position, and few can dispute that. Sorry to get all preachy, but i respect how hard they work at this stuff to make it work, and it shows. Are they overrated? Maybe, I guess, but they put stuff out that consistently makes people happy.

I was mainly pointing out that all companies have dry streaks, but that Pixar at least makes theirs bearable. Their films dont try to be aimed at kids and become patronising. That's something dreamworks and blue sky are incredibly guilty of with Ice age, the newer shrek films, madagascar, etc.

Less substance + appeal hard to kids = parents take kids to go see it, movie makes a zillion bucks for no effort/cost, IQ of the country slips another 2 or 3 points, and that is exactly how we end up with the Emoji movie, which is what this whole discussion is about.
Just because it's aimed at kids, doesn't make it OK to be valueless.

This is usually a sign of laziness on part of the creators, or a lack of committment to a project, or the belief that aiming exclusively at kids is the way to make money. Yes, its the EASY way to make money, but it means nothing for filmmaking or animation as an art, which is why even if stuff like that succeeds, it gets slammed in terms of ratings.
It isnt fair to make shitty films just because kids eat them up. I sure as hell didn't enjoy boringand patronising kiddy films even when I was a kid, and im sure thats quite common for alot of children
As I have said before, this is how you end up with the emoji movie, by relying on a stupid fad to gain views and attention from the lowest common denominator: Children whos parents have money to spare and want to shut them up
I appreciate film and animation, thats why I care, even if a film is made for children, I believe it should be made well, with a coherent, enjoyable story, not a half assed saturday morning cartoon plot designed around selling toys.
