Ballistically the proper hallowpoint 556 is better for home defense than a shotgun. 556 is so light and with a hollow point it will just tumble and lose energy when it hits dry wall and lose energy .. won't worry about over penetration. Buckshot on the other hand will keep going. And forget about the whole "you don't have to aim" bullshit. The grouping of the shot is still small at any reasonable home defense range. An ar15 Has less recoil and can legally be shorter. way easier to handle than a 12 gauge
