As the screen faded to black, you saw your face appear in the now reflective window of the electronics store. You had come to the mall today to pick up some new clothes for a dinner party, but you can't deny that the ad you just saw caught your interest a bit. You used to be an avid fluffy lover, but whenever you would actually try to own one, you couldn't keep them alive for more than a week.

You weren't a bad owner or anything, just really unlucky. One of your fluffies choked on the one tiny meatball you had put in their spaghetti, another flipped it's litterbox on top of itself while you were out for the day and managed to starve to death in the 4 hour period you were gone. Your most recent fluffy literally died for no reason; like, you got the vet to check him out and he had just flopped over dead with no cause beyond the sheer impossibility of his life to begin with. Needless to say, you were pretty anxious to get back into fluffy care.

However this "Fluffy 2.0" thing seemed pretty sweet. It promised increased durability, complete removal of smarty syndrome, and many other much requested changes that still kept the stupid nature that made fluffies so damn endearing in the first place. You feel a bit bad making impulse purchases, but everybody has to splurge now and again, right?

Without another moments hesitation you march your way over to the malls pet shop while thinking about what new name to give your pet.

As you walked into the pet store, the first thing you heard was fluffy shouting. The first thing you saw was a very disheartened looking employee on his phone at the front desk. When he notices you coming in, his expression turns to annoyance, before quickly reverting to a cheery plastic smile and a quick glance at a camera above the door.

"Hello there sir! How can I help you today!" He says with obviously forced enthusiasm.

"Uh, yeah I just saw a thing on TV about some new type of fluffy and uh I was wondering if you guys would carry those here?"

"Oh, you mean the fluffy 2.0's? Yes we just got a shipment in last night so we have a full stock. They're right over this way sir." He gestures for you to follow him and together you walk to the back right of the store, passing by dozens of desperate fluffys reaching out for you.

At the back, there's a decent sized pen with 10 to 15 regular looking fluffies. The major difference you can see is that none of them are begging or pleading for your affection. In fact, they aren't really doing much of anything at all. Weird.


"So, are there any that catch your interest sir?"

You had kinda expected him to try and sell you on this, but I guess he just couldn't be bothered.

"Uh, well none of them seem to be doing much. So I guess, I like the way that green one looks?" You respond uncertainly while pointing to a nice light green and blue one near the front of the pen. It doesn't seem to react to your choice beyond looking up at you with dull eyes.


"Hey are you sure these things act like regular fluffies? The commercial said they would but these guys seem pretty boring right now."

"Oh wow that's actually pretty cool then I guess. How much are they?"

"Well it's gonna be about 15 for that green one there, but that includes food and a bed." He says, thinking about it for a moment.

That price tag sounds way to low for a product like this.

With a seed of worry you inquire "Wait seriously? Only 15? This is a brand new thing right? Why is it so cheap?"

He drops his cheery persona for a second.


"Hey buddy, how much do you really know about these things?"

"I just found out they existed maybe 10 minutes ago."

He gives you a look of... pity? Maybe?

"Look, legally I can't say anything about the product that could negatively impact sales. So I'll just say that the product is a bit, new, so they want to get people familiarized with it before they raise the price."


That was a very unsatisfying answer, but you were already planning to buy the little guy so why should a vague and ominous comment from somebody who knows a lot more than you impact that decision in any way at all?

"Alright I'll take it then!"

You give the clerk 15 dollars cash and walk out of the store with your new fluffy, and some supplies.

When you get home, you set the carrier down in your old safe room and open the door. The fluffy slowly walks out of the crate and sniffs the air with his snout, looking around as he does. His eyes settle on you as you kneel down to introduce yourself.

"Hey there little guy, you're awfully quiet. Aren't you excited? This is your room and I'm your new daddy!" You say trying to get some kind of reaction out of the creature.

"Hewwo nice mistah. Fwuffy wuv ou." It responds in a surprisingly monotone voice.

"Uh, you know you can call me "Daddeh" right? I won't get mad or anything." You're a bit worried that maybe he's broken or something.

"Sowwy nice mistah, if ou want to be cawwed "Daddeh" den ou must puwchase da daddeh/mummah DWC for $3.99"

"Wait what? I don't want to buy you something, I just want you to call me daddy.

"Ou must puwchase da daddeh DWC to unwock dat featuwe of fwuffy 2.0" It repeats robotically.

Oh, oh no. You suddenly understand why this was so cheap.

"Are you saying I have to pay money for you to do something a regular fluffy does for free?" The tone of annoyance in your voice becomes obvious.

"Yus. Would ou wike to puwchase dis DWC?" It asks, continuing to ignore the saferoom around it in favor of staring at you.

"No, I don't want any fucking fluffy DLC. That's such a dumb idea. Call me whatever the hell you want I guess."

"Otay nice mistah, puwchase cancewwed."

"Alright whatever. Look to celebrate you living here now, I'm gonna go make some spaghetti for us, ok?" It stares back at you blankly.

"Just like, explore the saferoom until I get back." You sigh and exit the room.

"Uh hey, fluffy, I thought I said to explore the saferoom. Any reason why you're just uh, standing there?"

"Am sowwy, if ou want fwuffy to expwore, den ou must puwchase da fwuffy expwowew DWC fow onwy $8.99." It answers in the same tone as before.

"How is that locked behind DLC, it's literally just walking. This is one of the most basic natural functions you could possibly have, how can you not be able to do it without nine dollars!"

"Yeah alright ok I get it, $8.99." You interrupt with exasperation.

You slam the door back open and see that the fluffy hasn't even touched his spaghetti.

You take a long bath, relax, and try to calm down. Eventually, you feel more like yourself and set about to cleaning the now bloody safe room. You gather all the supplies and open the door to find the fluffy, still standing perfectly upright, eyes wide open, looking right at you. You open your mouth to scream but before you do, it speaks.
