In about an hour. The president of the United States will deliver a speech about a new carrier lunched today. This is a good time for other countries, all over the world, to remember who protects the international waters and assures a healthy balance of power on a global scale. This is a good time to say thank you.

The US has a military empire. We do not need another fucking carrier. The point of wasting money on arms is to keep defense contractors fat and happy.
>>
>>739704887

Someone has to be the Boss of the Planet. May as well be us. kek.
>>
>>739705151
Why should we be using battleships again, they became obsolete in the seventies and we haven't used them since
>>
>>739706950
Yes we do - they're called the Los Angeles Class subs. Hunter/Killers. We probably have one tailing every Chinese/Russian sub out there.

Kaboom. Ching Chong sub go pop.
>>
>>739707102
If AMS becomes better you could conceivably see a shift back to battleships.
>>
>>739706812
Wrong. They are even worse than average carriers. In addition to the aircraft; they carry infantry marines ready to storm any beach around the world.
>>
>>739705093

Justify your argument as to why carriers are obsolete.

They allow projection of military power literally anywhere on the globe - our options without them are basically, "nuke it, or drop conventional munitions from a small number of long range bombers." With a carrier group, you suddenly have fighters and other air superiority assets in close range of most major population centers, and can support ground based assaults more closely without having to "own" a piece of dry land first.
>>
>>739706710

Yeah, I do. We live in an age of asymmetrical warfare. The dune coons aren't exactly floating dinghys out to challenge us. Besides, drone warfare is the future and we can launch those fuckers from anywhere. Carriers are big dick measuring devices that are fuck all useful.

Destroyers haven't been a thing since WWII. Guided missile ships are where it's at.
>>
>>739707195
I wish we kept the Battleships, if for no other reason than to tell the world we DGAF. Giant monster-sized holes await anyone who fucks with us. 16 inch guns that can throw a VW 26 miles. c'mon, that is about as bad ass as it gets...
>>
>>739707381
Battleships look pretty intimidating and badass, but they are now obsolete. They don't stand a chance against a modern mid-size war ship.
>>
>>739707295
Nothing scares the kids like a batch of screaming Super Hornets flying overhead all of a sudden. Backed by a shit-ton of Marines ready to wade ashore and fuck you up proper.

That's the power of the Aircraft Carrier - it isn't even in the application of the force, its just the idea of what it is capable of doing, and that the POTUS thought enough about whatever the fuck bad thing you're doing to send a couple groups of them your way.
>>
>>739707381
It is just going to be a matter of time before they develop a reliable way to shield ships from bombs and guided missils.

When that happens big guns will be the best weapon. Though the US doesn't really have much need for a navy that can defeat an enemy navy. No one else has anything close to a fight.
>>
>>739707295

Asymmetric warfare is all cool and shit until china or Russia get a wild hair and suddenly that warfare ain't so asymmetric.

Also, if you're only focusing on the threat posed by non-state terrorist groups, you're completely ignorant of the geopolitical realities of the world we live in. In case you haven't noticed, Russia and China have both been doing a lot of saber rattling. North Korea, Iran also love themselves a tussle. Ignoring those threats because "not a Muslim jihaidst threat" is fucking ridiculous.

And there are tons of shit that missiles and drones can't do. For some jobs you need the flexibility of a fighter pilot. war isn't all about firing missiles at buildings from half a world away.

WTF is this uneducated nonsense? they're an air force base on the go. And no one can can get near a US carrier. They are surrounded by a battle group. That consists of smaller warships and at least two submarines. Any direct missile or warplane would get shot out of the sky before coming even close to a carrier in a combat zone.

I am a former employee of a dod research facility and have worked on programs related to the use of towed hydrophone arrays to detect auvs and other such craft. The US has lost the edge we had coming out of ww2 when the rest of the world focused on electromagnetics for submarine detection and we focused on acoustics. Sadly it is true that we do not have the capability to detect most modern submarines and the Navy has lacked a coherent strategy for submarine warfare. In the event of a major conflict our air craft carriers will not be as effective as you think. They are vulnerable to submarine attack.

Most anti-ship missiles have a warhead around 500-1000lbs.

I disagree. Modern ships have almost no armor. A battleship can take a fucking beating and keep on fighting.

>>
>>739709748
The point is that, if they are large enough to carry weapons to damage a ship. They are going to be able to be shot down.

In which case the entire premise of swarming a warship with many small drones is impracticable.

Will we eventually see fewer and fewer pilots in favor of remote vehicles? Yes, but that isn't what we are talking about.

And that 1lb of HE is more then enough to make nice holes in the deck with a shaped charge head, too.

So no, the future is small, cheap and numerous and not big, expensive and few.

Supercarriers aren't going to be useful in the future. Drones are small, cheap, and easy to make. They can definitely be used to overwhelm a carrier and sink it or shoot down an F-22. If you have the industry you can just keep pumping out cheap drones to replace the ones you lost while the same can't be said for something like the F-22 or a super-carrier.

Is this their new plan to try and get people to fear / repsect the US again?

Are they all like "I know you think we're a joke because Trump is President, but look we've still got all these weapons of war!... please fear us... please"
>>
>>739707295
You are seriously deluded..trust me you have no idea what you're talking about.
>>
>>739709227
>You seem to be implying that an aircraft carrier could hold off thousands of small fast moving, well armed drones

for one, a "well armed drone" isn't going to be that small. it will have a radar signature that will leave it open to missile fire from far off. and if someone is launching "thousands", that base will be obliterated before they can launch more than a few. they will be tracked back to their launch point.

Hey there, brother.
That's all fine and dandy.
Personally, even during my time in service, I've never been a fan of the DOD's spending habits.

and you are losing.

>What if they did have lasers? Where would your naval superiority be then?

strapping bombs to dolphins. we had them in the 50s.

Congratulations you ironically quoted a correct statement.

Well we wiped out Iraq's army pretty fucking quick, the Taliban have been pretty much shit for years now..of course in those 2 countries you mention they haven't had any peace in a thousand years for one reason or another so I didn't expect things to be calm after we went there and mostly left after fucking them up.

kek. this iran drone fuck is envisioning thousands of the small personal camera size 4 rotor drones taking out an aircraft carrier. he doesn't know what a weapons capable drone looks like.

The main reason battleships became obsolete was due to missiles, a modern destroyer could launch a barrage at a battleship and completely destroy it before it's artillery guns even got within range.

Agreed about the spending, throwing good money after bad to keep underwhelming combat platforms going like the LCS and F-35 going just to fill pockets hurts more than helps in the long run.
>>
>>739717836
You mean the chinese CH-5 Rainbow produced in saudi arabia and sold to every country paying enough in the middle east?
>>
>>739708898
Yes so a marine cook is an augmented Rifleman. But these amphibious assault ships can not fill or replace the role of a carrier. They can carry a handful of Harrier jump Jets. But so can a destroyer or cruiser in an emergency, that does not turn them into aircraft carriers though
>>
>>739709154
Fuck off world police, so many issues in the modern world are due to american meddling.
>>
>>739708945
Let me guess, you're a piece of dog shit Hillary fan from the far left right? You hate America so get the fuck out loser..Hillary was put into retirement.

Yeah they're heavily armored and they can throw Volkswagen Beetles offensively, but it doesn't necessarily mean they're useful on the modern Battlefield. An old-school cannon is probably more powerful than an assault rifle but id rather have an assault rifle crew than a cannon crew

China is building a lot of carriers now. Also there's no way they won't have the biggest navy in the future.
>>
>>739719697
So they're building aircraft carriers and so is the rest of the first world, so why is it impossible they won't have the biggest Navy? They're starting from almost zero while we outrank them all combined in with a vulgar amount of raw numbers and Power
>>
>>739704825
I'd have much rather seen the cost of this thing go right into NASAs pocket. Who are we protecting? We have all these tools and we can't do anything but proxy wars via rebel trash that come to hate us later.

This shit only matters if the nuke was gone, now we can't have a gool ol' fashion conventional without the whole world going.
>>
>>739719298
It was a joke, a joke that I knew no one would get.
No one actually voted for Gerald Ford. Nixon appointed him VP when Spirow Agnew resigned as VP, and then Ford became president when Nixon resigned. He's the only entirely un-elected president in US history.

>Naming a battle ship after a brain damaged, fall over all the time piece of shit.
Really instills fear in our enemies, I bet.
>>
>>739720208
I'd be pretty afraid to go near an aircraft carrier that I thought might fall on me.
